Under the current double challenge of energy and the environment, an effective nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) has become a very urgent need. However, the largest production of ammonia gas today is carried out by the Haber–Bosch process, which has many disadvantages, among which energy consumption and air pollution are typical. As the best alternative procedure, electrochemistry has received extensive attention. In this paper, a catalyst loaded with Fe3 clusters on the two-dimensional material C2N (Fe3@C2N) is proposed to achieve effective electrochemical NRR, and our first-principles calculations reveal that the stable Fe3@C2N exhibits excellent catalytic performance for electrochemical nitrogen fixation with a limiting potential of 0.57 eV, while also suppressing the major competing hydrogen evolution reaction. Our findings will open a new door for the development of non-precious single-cluster catalysts for effective nitrogen reduction reactions.

Abstract We present an alternative synthesis strategy for developing nanocrystalline (Ga1−xZnx)(N1−xOx) semiconductors known to be very efficient photoabsorbers. In a first step we produce mixtures of highly crystalline β-Ga2O3 and wurtzite-type ZnO nanoparticles by chemical vapor synthesis. (Ga1−xZnx)(N1−xOx) nanoparticles of wurtzite structure are then formed by reaction of these precursor materials with ammonia. Microstructure as well as composition (zinc loss) changes with nitridation time: band gap energy, crystallite size and crystallinity increase, while defect density decreases with increasing nitridation time. Crystallite growth results in a corresponding decrease in specific surface area. In the UV regime photocatalytic activity for overall water splitting can be monitored for samples both before and after nitridation. We find a significantly lower photocatalytic activity in the nitrided samples, even though the crystallinity is significantly higher and the defect density is significantly lower after nitridation. Both properties should have led to a lower probability for charge carrier recombination, and, consequently, to a higher photocatalytic activity.

The hierarchical porous TiO2hollow spheres were successfully prepared by using the hydrothermally synthesized colloidal carbon spheres as templates and tetrabutyl titanate as inorganic precursors. The diameter and wall thickness of hollow TiO2spheres were determined by the hard templates and concentration of tetrabutyl titanate. The particle size, dispersity, homogeneity, and surface state of the carbon spheres can be easily controlled by adjusting the hydrothermal conditions and adding certain amount of the surfactants. The prepared hollow spheres possessed the perfect spherical shape, monodispersity, and hierarchically pore structures, and the further experiment verified that the present approach can be used to prepare other metal oxide hollow spheres, which could be used as catalysis, fuel cells, lithium-air battery, gas sensor, and so on.

Nitrogen fixation by Aphanizomenon flos-aquae in a prairie lake in southwestern Manitoba was dependent on the light intensity and in situ oxygen concentrations. The mean molar ratio of acetylene reduction to nitrogen reduction was 5.8:1. High external ammonium concentrations did not appear to inhibit nitrogen fixation over the short term. Nitrogen fixation was not directly initiated by the bloom collapse. We propose that the coupled sequence of ammonia volatilization and nitrogen fixation was triggered by the bloom collapse and that the bloom collapse was caused by coprecipitation of orthophosphate with carbonates. 32PO4 turnover was most rapid during periods when the lake was opalescent, presumably due to carbonate precipitaton.
