Little attention has been paid to the nano-TiO2as corrosion inhibitor before. In this paper, Myristic acid-modified nano-TiO2(MA-TiO2) were synthesized by Myristic acid and tetrabutyl titanate via the sol-gel method, and it was characterized by IR and TEM. MA-TiO2was dispersed in oil, and used as a corrosion inhibitor. From the Tafel plots and EIS spectra, we can know that the values of the current densities decreased by the addition of MA-TiO2. Because of the MA-TiO2formed a deposition layer in the surface of 45#carbon steel panels, the current density of the the base oil with MA-TiO2is much smaller than the base oil. The inhibition efficiency was over 90% with added 5 wt % TiO2.

Nanocoatings plays an important role in coating industry. The solution was being prepared through copolymerization of epoxy resin hardener and with the incorporation of metal oxide nanoparticles, Zinc Oxide (ZnO) and Silica (SiO2). ZnO and SiO2 were synthesized using sol-gel. Epoxy hardener acted as host while the metal oxide nanoparticles as guest components. The formulation of nanocoatings with excellent adhesion strength and corrosion protection of carbon steel was studied. The performance of wetting ability with different medium was analysed using contact angle. Water medium showed the addition of 3wt% of hybrid between ZnO and SiO2 was the best nanocoating to form hydrophobic surface and was also the best nanocoating surface to form hydrophilic surface with vacuum oil dropping. In oil dropping, the contact angle was smaller than 90° and the water drop tends to spreads on surface.

Sol-gel Zr0.1Ce0.9O2 and Zr0.1(Ce0.75Pr0.25)O2 mixed oxides and coprecipitated pure ceria CeO2 displaying the fluorine type structure have been used as platinum or ruthenium catalysts’ supports for catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) of aqueous solution of acetic acid (78 mmol.L-1). These catalysts were prepared by conventional impregnation (5 wt-%) from platinum and ruthenium precursor salts or by exchange (~2 wt-%) in the case of ruthenium. A screening of catalysts in CWAO at 200°C under 2 MPa was performed and reveals that the best platinum catalyst is supported on pure ceria displaying large surface. For ruthenium catalysts, the highest conversion after 3 hours of reaction has been reached by the Ru/Zr-Ce-O system.

Chromium pre-treatments of metal have been replaced by silane pre-treatments as more environmental friendly option. Nanoparticles can be added in the silane sol-gel network have been reported to improve corrosion resistance. In this work, the electrochemical corrosion resistance of low carbon steel coated with hybrid organic-inorganic sol-gel film filled with nanoparticles was evaluated. The sol-gel films have been synthesized from 3-glycidoxy-propyl-trimethoxy-silane (3-GPTMS) and tetra-ethyl-ortho-silicate (TEOS) precursors. These films have been impregnated with 300 ppm of silica or alumina nanoparticles. The electrochemical behavior of the coated steel was evaluated by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Equivalent circuit modeling, used for quantifying the EIS measurements showed that sol-gel films containing silica nanoparticles improved the barrier properties of the silane coating. The silica nanoparticle-containing films showed highest initial pore resistance over the five days of immersion in 0.05M NaCl.

Anticorrosive coatings prepared by sol-gel derived approaches have become an emergent research area in the field of corrosion prevention materials. Furthermore, enhanced coating thickness can greatly improve the barrier effect of the sol-gel coatings, thus influencing their service life in industrial applications. Here, we propose the preparation of a two-layer coating system using a low-cost sol-gel derived method. The coating structure was composed of first an underlying layer incorporated with silica and titania powder as filler and pigment materials, and a second translucent topcoat containing a colloidal silica sol-gel matrix crosslinked by methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS). This coating system was applied on Q235 carbon steel substrate by a two-step spray deposition method, resulting in an enhanced coating thickness of around 35 μm. The physical and morphological properties of the coatings were characterized using multiple techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The anticorrosion performance of the sol-gel coatings was studied by a salt spray test, outdoor exposure test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Results revealed that this two-layer coating system exhibited excellent physical and anticorrosion properties, and that the topcoat played a crucial role in maintaining the barrier effect and preventing water leakage.

To improve the corrosion resistance on Q235 low carbon steel, in this paper, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), N-dodecyl trimethoxysilane and γ-(2,3-epoxypropoxy) propytrimethoxysilane (KH560) were used to make organic-inorganic hybrid sol-gel film. Cross cut test adhesion method, neutral salt spray test, electrochemical test and film protective efficiency were taken to value the corrosion resistance property. The corrosion topography was studied by optical microscope. In addition, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) curves and equivalent electric circuit fitting were used to analyze the corrosion mechanism. The cross cut adhesion of sol-gel film can reach 1 class and the protection class can attain 5 class after 72 hours neutral salt spray test. According to the potentiodynamic polarization curve analysis, the corrosion potential of sol-gel film coating sample after 0.5 hours immersion was -0.46 V (vs. SCE) on the 0.1 Hz, and its corrosion current density was 4.74×10-7 A·cm-2. The corrosion potential of bare Q235 low carbon steel plate after 0.5 hours immersion was -0.78 V (vs. SCE) on the 0.1 Hz, and its corrosion current density was 4.75×10-6 A·cm-2. The impedance value on 0.1 Hz (|Z|0.1Hz) (1.27×106 Ω·cm2) of sol-gel film coating sample was more than three orders of magnitude higher than the value of the low carbon steel plate. Even dipping in 3.5 wt. % NaCl for 72 hours, the |Z|0.1Hz value of sol-gel coating sample was still one order of magnitude higher than the low carbon steel plate with 0.5 hours immersion. Sol-gel film with excellent adhesion can significantly improve the corrosion resistance of low carbon steel plate. Sol-gel film can increase the protection efficiency of low carbon steel plate by 90%.
