This chapter provides an overview of the use of adaptive training technology within the military domain. Throughout the chapter, we will discuss the use of intelligent tutoring, adaptive interactive multimedia instruction, and their combination to form closed-loop adaptive training. Frequently, the discussion of a particular approach will be illustrated with one or more case-studies. Moreover, we will explore impediments to widespread adoption of these interventions throughout the military, methods to overcome these impediments, and the migration of this technology into other domains. We will conclude by summarizing trends that are likely to characterize on-going development. Rather than providing a comprehensive review of technology-enhanced learning in the military, which is likely to be outdated before it is published, the author hopes that this illustrative review will open new avenues of thought for researchers, developers, and purchasers of these systems.

In this paper, we describe the maker concept, movement and culture and its impact on and relationship with libraries. We provide a comprehensive review of library makerspaces in North America supported by several case studies. We intend this review to be used as a reference resource or tool for libraries planning to implement a new makerspace.

In 2015–16 Germany was confronted with over 1 million new refugees, which challenged public and private institutions alike and increasingly divided public sentiments. This article investigates the cultural, political, and economic dynamics as they were in Germany in 2015–16 and in particular how its higher education sector responded. The discussion covers a comprehensive review of media debates, public and private institutional research, new German- and English-language scholarship, and case studies the authors collected of fiffeen universities. The article ends with recommendations as German universities prepare for 30,000–50,000 refugees eligible for study in the coming years.

This chapter offers a comprehensive review of the tribute system, which shows that the existing literature has largely ignored the role played by less powerful East Asian states. It is in this chapter that I suggest a new, more nuanced interpretation of the tribute system through the lens of “practices” rather than the “system.” The chapter then discusses in some details the concept of authority in the specific early modern East Asian context, while drawing on the writings of Chinese and Korean tributary envoys. The chapter also addresses questions of research design and explains the selection of case studies.

As students increasingly engage with alternative social networking (or realities) there is a scope for educators to explore whether they pose opportunities for rethinking learning and teaching spaces. The authors argue that there is a requirement to shift away from mapping traditional thinking about what constitutes a learning experience when considering virtual worlds. This chapter draws upon two case studies that have provided two distinctly different learning designs for Logistics students and pre-service teachers. These cases, alongside a comprehensive review of the use of virtual worlds in education will draw out issues and factors which need to be considered when pursuing virtual worlds as learning spaces. Specifically, discussion and recommendations will have a focus on pedagogical, organisational, equity and access, cultural, economic and social factors relevant to the use of virtual worlds in distance education.

Today, by the diversity of advanced structural systems, structures are guided to lighter designs, more efficient and stunning, tensile fabric structures are getting popular more and more everyday because of their lightness, quickly and easily installation, cheapness and also durability improvement of materials. Due to the necessity of recognizing the types of these structures, in this paper authors have tried to present a comprehensive review and appropriate analysis for these kinds of structures. In the first phase, after describing the desired topic, 52 case studies of Tensile Fabric Structures and their general features have been deliberated. At last all case studies were classified based on location, year of construction, base structure, material and form. Assessing these items, classified case studies could have been analysed. In this article, with focus on structural form, Tensile Fabric Structures were analysed in 3 categories: Hypar, Conic and Barrel. The method and results of analysis based on the structural information will be presented and discussed.
