Lanthanide molecular clusters as near-infrared markers are highly tunable owing to the bottom-up synthetic approach. Facile synthesis, high crystallinity, water stability are all highly desirable attributes of clusters for biological and telecommunications technology.

Ultra-small and functional copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) have been extensively used in consumer technologies due to their superior properties. A simple and green way to prepare stable, water-soluble and near-infrared (NIR) Cu NCs by using a reducing agent was reported in this work. Reduced glutathione (GSH) worked as an important scaffold to prevent NCs from aggregating. Since GSH has functional groups such as carboxyl and amino, it can also be used in reducing Cu 2+ ions. The resulting GSH– Cu NCs with a particle size of 2.5 nm have good dispersibility in aqueous solution, and show NIR emission with a wavelength of 700 nm (quantum yield 0.6%). MC3T3-E1 cells are used as an example in the fluorescence imaging of GSH– Cu NCs. Several promising features including NIR fluorescence, good water-solubility and biocompatibility, bioactive surface and ultra-small size make the GSH– Cu NCs a good probe for cells.

<p>We describe the growth and characterization of highly fluorescing, near-infrared-emitting nanoclusters made of bimetallic Au25-xAgx cores, prepared using various monothiol-appended hydrophobic and hydrophilic ligands. The reaction uses well-defined triphenylphosphine-protected Au11 clusters (as precursors), which are reacted with Ag(I)-thiolate complexes. The prepared nanoclusters are small (diameter < 2nm, as characterized by TEM) with emission peak at 760 nm and long lifetime (~12 µs). The quantum yield measured for these materials was 0.3 - 0.4 depending on the ligand. XPS measurements show the presence of both metal atoms in the core, with measured binding energies that agree with reported values for nanocluster materials. The NIR emission combined with high quantum yield, small size and ease of surface functionalization afforded by the coating, make these materials suitable to implement investigations that address fundamental questions and potentially useful for biological sensing and imaging applications.<br></p>
