A novel strategy for the oxidation of Mg-based intermetallic compounds using CO<sub>2</sub> as an oxidizing agent was realized via simple thermal treatment, called ‘CO2-thermic Oxidation Process (CO-OP)’. Furthermore, as a value-added application, electrochemical properties of one of the reaction products (carbon-coated macroporous silicon) was evaluated. Considering the facile tunability of the chemical/physical properties of Mg-based intermetallics, we believe that this route can provide a simple and versatile platform for functional energy materials synthesis as well as CO<sub>2</sub> chemical utilization in an environment-friendly and sustainable way.

Abstract Highly-integrated radio frequency and mixed-mode devices that are manufactured in deep-submicron or more advanced CMOS processes are becoming more complex to analyze. The increased complexity presents us with many eccentric failure mechanisms that are uniquely different from traditional failure mechanisms found during failure analysis on digital logic applications. This paper presents a novel methodology to overcome the difficulties and discusses two case studies which demonstrate the application of the methodology. Through the case studies, the methodology was proven to be a successful approach. It is also proved how this methodology would work for such non-recognizable failures.

This article focuses on M15 organization and Klaus Fuchs, a German-born physicist and Soviet “Atom Spy” who was arrested in 1950 and served fourteen years for offences related to atomic espionage. It examines how Fuchs was identified as an “Atom Spy” in 1949 and describes the MI5's investigation, which ended in the early 1950 with the successful arrest, prosecution, and imprisonment of this highly significant Cold War figure. Key issues discussed in this article include the difficulties encountered by MI5 and the budding British atomic program in the sphere of security. It also discusses the role of Signals intelligence (SIGINT) in the investigation of Fuchs, and the high-risk but ultimately successful approach taken by MI5's key interrogator, William Skardon. This case study highlights both the unparalleled level of international intelligence cooperation between the British agencies and their American counterparts, which made the resolution of this case possible, and some of the frailties in the Anglo-American alliance that were brought to the fore by the exposure of Fuchs as an Atom Spy.

AbstractA series of ethylene-propylene-diene-terpolymer (EPDM)/polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) composites at different percentage of POSS were prepared and subjected to γ-irradiation. Both irradiated and non-irradiated EPDM and composites were investigated by the means of thermal analysis to verify if the presence of POSS molecules is able to reduce the oxidation level of free radicals generated during the degradation and to evaluate the effects of the irradiation. EPDM composites at 1, 3 and 5 mass% of POSS were thus degraded in a thermogravimetric (TG) balance in dynamic heating conditions (25–700 °C), in both inert and oxidative atmosphere by flowing nitrogen and air respectively. Thermal characterization was then completed by carrying out Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) analysis from sub-ambient to better highlight the melting of the polymer and polymer composites occurring just above the room temperature. FTIR spectroscopy was also performed for the prepared samples to check the presence of the molecular filler in the composites and for the TG’s residue at 700 °C, in order to evaluate its nature. DSC and TGA parameters were detected and discussed to have information about the effect of the degradation’s environment, the effect of irradiation on polymer stabilization and the effect of POSS content in the polymer matrix.

Abstract Background and purpose Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a successful approach to treat unilateral symptomatic neglected hip dislocation (NHD). However, the extensive leg length discrepancy (LLD) can hereby only be partially corrected. In case of residual LLD of more than 2 cm, subsequent femoral lengthening can be considered. Patients/material/methods Retrospective analysis of clinical data and radiographs of five patients (age 38.1 (28–51) years) with unilateral NHD who underwent THA with (n  = 3) or without (n = 2) subtrochanteric shortening osteotomy (SSO) and secondary intramedullary femoral lengthening through a retrograde magnetically-driven lengthening nail (follow-up 18.4 (15–27) months). Results LLD was 51.0 (45–60) mm before and 37.0 (30–45) mm after THA. Delayed bone union at one SSO site healed after revision with autologous bone grafting and plate fixation. Subsequent lengthening led to leg length equalisation in all patients. Complete consolidation was documented in all lengthened segments. Conclusion Staged reconstruction via THA and secondary femoral lengthening can successfully be used to reconstruct the hip joint and equalise LLD. The specific anatomical conditions have to be taken into consideration when planning treatment, and patients ought to be closely monitored.
