As the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) films are applied to the field emission cathodes in the vacuum devices, heat treatment in the range of 400°C–500°C is often conducted during the device sealing process, especially for glass-based devices. The annealing temperature effect on the field emission of the CNT films prepared by chemical vapor deposition is investigated. The CNT film annealed at 400°C in air contains less amorphous carbon phase, and shows better field emission properties comparing to the as-grown CNT film. Annealing at 450°C causes serious oxidative damage along the tube walls, resulting in the poor field emission performance. The CNTs annealed at 500°C are all burned out. The experiment shows that the sealing temperature at 400°C or below can be conducted in air, while the sealing temperature above 400°C should be done in N 2 or Ar ambient.

Three kinds of different diameter carbon nanotubes (CNTS) films deposited on aluminum sheets by electrophoretic deposition method. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the surface morphology of the films. The field emission properties of the films were tested by using a diode structure. The turn-on field for 8nm diameter CNTs film was 0.8V/μm and the current density of 5200μA/cm2 was obtained at 2.3V/μm. While corresponding data for 15nm and 30nm CNTs films were 1.6V/μm, 1.4V/μm, and 2200μA/cm2, 850μA/cm2 at 3.0V/μm respectively. The deposited film with 8nm diameter CNTs appeared excellent emission properties.

High density、uniform particles diamond films were synthesized by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (MWPCVD) method on Si (100). In order to improve field emission properties of thin films, sputtering the metal Ti、Al、Mo、Ni on the diamond surface respectively,and compared the kinds of diamond/metal composite film of field emission performance. The results show that the field emission properties of diamond / metal Ti composite thin film are better. The possible mechanism will be discussed in this study.
