A splitting of two O3 phases, rather than the often observed O1 phases in the conventional LiCoO2 electrode, was discovered in the LiNi0.85Co0.10Mn0.05O2 at high-voltage region (>4.6 V) by in situ high-resolution synchrotron radiation diffraction.

The highly-collimated, intense X-rays produced by a synchrotron radiation source can be harnessed to build high-resolution powder diffraction instruments with a wide variety of applications. The general advantages of using synchrotron radiation for powder diffraction are discussed and illustrated with reference to the structural characterisation of crystalline materials, atomic PDF analysis, in-situ and high-throughput studies where the structure is evolving between successive scans, and the measurement of residual strain in engineering components.

Mg-4Nd base alloys with Zn additions of 3, 5 and 8 wt % were investigated with in situ synchrotron radiation diffraction during solidification. This method enabled the investigation of phase formation and transformation in the alloys. The diffraction results were supported with TEM observations on the as-solidified samples. The results show the effect of increased Zn addition on stabilizing the Mg3RE phase (RE—rare earth). The experimental results agree only partially with the theoretical calculations indicating the need to improve the existing thermodynamic database on the alloy system.

ABSTRACTWe have conducted a systematic study of Ge-Cd1−xMnxTe heterostructures prepared in situ by deposition of polycrystalline Ge onto atomically clean Cd1−xMnx (110) surfaces. We examined by means of high resolution synchrotron radiation photoemission the valence band offset δEv as a function of the substrate composition x (x=0, 0.35, and 0.60) and bandgap Eg (Eg = 1.47, 1.93, and 2.13 eV). We find δEv=0.84±0.10eV in all cases, and no dependence of δEv on the substrate bandgap within experimental uncertainty. This finding indicates that within the range of validity of the transitivity rule, Cd1−xMnx-Cd1−yMny heterojunctions may actually follow the common anion rule.
