ABSTRACTLithium ion batteries with high-rate performance have been demanded since electric and hybrid vehicles are released. It is known that high interfacial resistance between electrode and electrolyte prevents intercalation of lithium ions. We investigated high-rate capability of typical LiCoO2 cathode with various surface morphologies using epitaxial thin films prepared by pulsed laser deposition. As a result, high-rate performance in (104)LiCoO2 thin films was enhanced by an increase of (110)LiCoO2 facet density because diffusion coefficient of (110)LiCoO2 was larger than that of (104)LiCoO2. Therefore, a control of crystal plane at the surface is a key point for high-rate performance.

Enhanced high-rate performance of TiO2-B nanowires can be achieved by introducing “lattice voids” to produce a partially disordered structure. The obtained TiO2-B nanowires can show the same excellent rate capability as TiO2-B nanotubes, but a much higher volumetric capacity and better capacity retention.

We develop a new aluminum graphite tri-ion (Li+/PF6−/BF4−) battery configuration (AGTIB) using an anion-hybridization strategy with fast diffusion kinetics. The AGTIB has a high rate performance with a 90.5 mA h g−1 capacity at 15C and good cycling stability for over 500 cycles at 5C.

The hierarchical porosity leads to the excellent rate capability of ca. 84% retention from 0.1 A g−1 to 20 A g−1, higher than that of many hierarchical porous carbons reported in previous literatures.
