We report on a one-step method for cutting 250-µm-thick quartz plates using highly focused ultrashort laser pulses with a duration of 200 fs and a wavelength of 1030 nm. We show that the repetition rate, the scan speed, the pulse overlap and the pulse energy directly influence the cutting process and quality. Therefore, a suitable choice of these parameters was necessary to get single-pass stealth dicing with neat and flat cut edges. The mechanism behind the stealth dicing process was ascribed to tensile stresses generated by the relaxation of the compressive stresses originated in the laser beam focal volume during irradiation in the bulk material. Such stresses produced micro-fractures whose controlled propagation along the laser beam path led to cutting of the samples.

The possibility of phase manipulation and temporal tailoring of ultrashort laser pulses enables new opportunities for optimal processing of materials. Phase-manipulated ultrafast laser pulses allow adapting the laser energy delivery rate to the material properties for optimal processing laying the groundwork for adaptive optimization in materials structuring. Different materials respond with specific reaction pathways to the sudden energy input depending on the efficiency of electron generation and on the ability to release the energy into the lattice. The sequential energy delivery with judiciously chosen pulse trains may induce softening of the material during the initial steps of excitation and change the energy coupling for the subsequent steps. We show that this can result in lower stress, cleaner structures, and allow for a materialdependent optimization process.

AbstractOptical waveguide Bragg gratings (WBGs) can be created in transparent materials using femtosecond laser pulses. The technique is conducted without the need for lithography, ion-beam fabrication methods, or clean room facilities. This paper reviews the field of ultrafast laser-inscribed WBGs since its inception, with a particular focus on fabrication techniques, WBG characteristics, WBG types, and WBG applications.

Abstract This paper presents the use of pulsed laser stimulation with picosecond and femtosecond laser pulses. We first discuss the resolution improvement that can be expected when using ultrashort laser pulses. Two case studies are then presented to illustrate the possibilities of the pulsed laser photoelectric stimulation in picosecond single-photon and femtosecond two-photon modes.
