Abstract Dual-functionality Au-on-Ag nanostructures (AOA) were fabricated on a silicon substrate by first immobilizing citrate-reduced Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs, ~43 nm in diameter), followed by depositing ~7 nm Au nanofilms (Au NFs) via thermal evaporation. Au NFs were introduced for their catalytic activity in concave-convex nano-configuration. Ag NPs underneath were used for their significant enhancement factor (EF) in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based measurements of analytes of interest. Rhodamine 6G (R6G) was utilized as the Raman-probe to evaluate the SERS sensitivity of AOA. The SERS EF of AOA is ~37 times than that of Au NPs. Using reduction of 4-nitrothiophenol (4-NTP) by sodium borohydride (NaBH4) as a model reaction, we demonstrated the robust catalytic activity of AOA as well as its capacity to continuously monitor via SERS the disappearance of reactant 4-NTP, emergence and disappearance of intermediate 4, 4’-DMAB, and the appearance of product 4-ATP throughout the reduction process in real-time and in situ.

Au NPs were generated via in situ reduction on copolymer brush P(OEGMA-co-MQ) functionalized GO. MQ units in the brushes as capping agents could stabilize the Au NPs. The Au NPs–GO hybrid exhibited high catalytic activity for the reduction of 4-NP.

Proteins and peptides, built from precisely defined amino acid sequences, are an important class of biomolecules that play a vital role in most biological functions. Preparation of nanostructures through functionalization of natural, hydrophilic proteins/peptides with synthetic polymers or upon self-assembly of all-synthetic amphiphilic copolypept(o)ides and amino acid-containing polymers enables access to novel protein-mimicking biomaterials with superior physicochemical properties and immense biorelevant scope. In recent years, polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) has been established as an efficient and versatile alternative method to existing self-assembly procedures for the reproducible development of block copolymer nano-objects in situ at high concentrations and, thus, provides an ideal platform for engineering protein-inspired nanomaterials. In this review article, the different strategies employed for direct construction of protein-, (poly)peptide-, and amino acid-based nanostructures via PISA are described with particular focus on the characteristics of the developed block copolymer assemblies, as well as their utilization in various pharmaceutical and biomedical applications.

A post-drying thermal annealing method is proposed to successfully fabricate micro-/nanostructures with 9,10-diphenylanthracene (DPA). Through varying operating temperature, different morphologies from 0-D to 3-D of pure DPA self-assembly were achieved and studied by SEM, XRD and PL spectra. The morphology transformation mechanism was also investigated. These results indicate that varying annealing temperature is an effective way to control the supramolecular architectures of DPA. In addition, such in situ fabrication on a substrate will provide possibility for manufacture of electronic devices which normally require surface deposition of nanomaterials.
