The surface of lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) is unique compared to conventional metal chalcogenide or pnictogenide semiconductor nanoparticles for its ionic character and the dynamic ligand layer, which makes them unstable in stock solutions and hinders the development of surface engineering strategies. This work employs a chelating strategy to form stable coordination on the PNC surface. Through screening a series of heterocyclic aromatic carboxylates, we found the best ligand, picolinate (PIC), with exceptional passivation effect to the surface traps of CsPbBr3 PNCs in the strongly quantum confined regime, resulting in > 0.8 photoluminescence quantum yields. The exciton lifetime in the passivated PNC approaches the radiative decay limit in various solvents. From an NMR titration experiment, the binding affinity of PIC is estimated to be at least 15 to 30 folds stronger than the original ligand from synthesis. The NMR and FTIR spectroscopic data and first-principles calculations elucidate the bidentate nature of the PIC coordination at the surface Pb site and the coadsorption of the ammonium-PIC ion pair. In apolar solvents, such as cyclohexane, the binding of PIC is stoichiometric to the available surface sites, suggesting the structure as a potent candidate for anchoring functional molecular structures to the PNC surface. In polar solvents, the strong affinity of PIC on the PNC surface provides protection for carrying out the precipitation-redissolution purification procedure that removes synthetic residual from the as-synthetic PNC samples. By modifying the purification procedure, we also develop a cation exchange procedure to replace the original oleylammonium cation with desired structures that consist of an ammonium anchoring group. Our results provide a direction for constructing strong interactions to protect the vulnerable surface of PNCs and pave the road for developing surface engineering strategies to functionalize these nanoparticles.

Inorganic lead-halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are an exciting class of luminescent materials with high defect tolerance and broad spectral tunability, but such NCs are vulnerable to degradation under ambient conditions. Here, we report a class of modular zwitterion-functionalized isopropyl methacrylate polymers designed to stabilize a wide variety of perovskite NCs of different compositions, while also enabling processing in green solvents. Specifically, we report polymers in which the zwitterion spacing is tuned to accommodate the different lattice parameters of CsPb(Cl<sub>1-<i>x</i></sub>Br<i><sub>x</sub></i>)<sub>3</sub> and CsPbI<sub>3</sub> NCs, and we report partially fluorinated polymers prepared to accommodate the needs of infrared-emitting NCs. We show that as-synthesized CsPbBr<sub>3</sub>, CsPbI<sub>3</sub>, and Yb<sup>3+</sup>:CsPbCl<sub>3</sub> NCs are easily transferred into these zwitterionic polymers <i>via</i> a simple ligand-exchange procedure. These NC/polymer composites were then cast into thin films that showed substantially improved photoluminescence (PL) and stability compared with more conventional NC/polymer films. Specifically, CsPbBr<sub>3</sub> and CsPbI<sub>3</sub> NCs in films of their appropriately designed polymers had PL quantum yields of ~90% and ~80%, respectively. PL quantum yields decreased under continuous illumination, but self-healed completely after dark storage. We also found that all the NC compositions studied here maintain their PL quantum yields in NC/polymer composite films even after 1 year of ambient storage. These encouraging results demonstrate the utility of such modular zwitterion-functionalized polymers for hosting specific perovskite NCs, potentially opening avenues for robust new photonic applications of this important class of NCs.

The interest on strongly emitting colloidal perovskite nanoparticles has been arisen explosively since several years. The versatility of the synthesis and the resulting scale-up, as well as high performance in terms of photoluminescence quantum yields and narrow spectra make these nanocrystals extremely attractive in optoelectronics. However, commonly known instability of these nanoparticles in aqueous environment is an important issue limiting their applications. This letter highlights a recent report by Geng et al. presenting direct aqueous synthesis of strongly emitting perovskite nanocrystals. One can foresee extrapolation of these results toward other perovskites including those based on Pb-free materials.
