The nanostructured cerium dioxide (CeO2) has been successfully fabricated using a simple precipitation method. Its characteristics were evaluated using TG-DTA, DR-UV-Vis, XRD, FTIR and TEM. The results showed that the nanostructured CeO2 has high purity and good crystalline nature, with face centered cubic (fcc) phase and the average diameter of CeO2 single crystal about 14 nm. Performance evaluation of the synthesized CeO2 samples showed that the nanostructured CeO2 has a strong adsorption toward acid orange-10 (AO-10) and congo red (CR) in aqueous solution. Under given experimental conditions (dye concentration of 15 mg/l, adsorbent dosage of 1 g/l, reaction temperature of 30 ? 1?C), it was estimated that the adsorption equilibrium for AO-10 and CR occurred at 60 min and 90 min of reaction time, respectively, with total removal of 96.82% for AO-10 dye and 93.55% for CR dye. The results suggested that the CeO2 nanopowder could be potentially used as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of synthetic organic dyes in aqueous solution and may address for future concern in the area.

Abstract In this paper, NiAlCe hydrotalcite was prepared by co-precipitation method and hydrothermal method in different volume fractions of ethylene glycol-water mixed solvent and polyethylene glycol-water mixed solvent, and the effect of photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange under ultraviolet light was studied. Samples were characterized by XRD, XPS, UV-Vis and FT-IR in order to find the reasons for the improvement of photocatalytic performance under co-solvent system. NiAlCe-10%EG(h) and NiAlCe-15%PEG(h) had smaller particle size, which was beneficial to photocatalytic performance. The degradation rate of methyl orange could reach up to 100% in 42 min using NiAlCe hydrotalcite with 10% volume fraction of EG and in 48 min using NiAlCe hydrotalcite with 15% volume fraction of PEG. The photocatalytic effect of NiAlCe hydrotalcite samples prepared by hydrothermal method were better than that prepared by co-precipitation method. This provided a new type of catalyst for the degradation of dyes: preparing with ethylene glycol-water mixed solvent.

A Zn,Al layered double hydroxide (LDH), with the hydrotalcite structure and the mixed oxide obtained upon its calcination at 650 °C, was tested in the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of 4-Nitrophenol in aqueous solution. The Zn,Al LDH was fast and easily obtained by the coprecipitation method. Hydrothermal treatment under microwave irradiation was applied to compare the effect of the ageing treatment on the photocatalytic behavior. The efficiency of the synthetized solids was compared to that of a commercial ZnO. The ageing treatment did not improve the performance of the original samples in the degradation of 4-nitrophenol. The activity of the synthetized solids tested exceeded that observed for the reaction with commercial ZnO. The photocatalytic performance of the original non-calcined hydrotalcite is similar to that of commercial ZnO. The calcined hydrotalcite showed a better performance in the adsorption-degradation of the contaminant than ZnO, and its reusability would be possible as it recovered the hydrotalcite-like structure during the reaction.
