Generally, enzyme immobilization on nanoparticles leads to nano-conjugates presenting partially preserved, or even absent, biological properties. Notwithstanding, recent research demonstrated that the coupling to nanomaterials can improve the activity of immobilized enzymes. Herein, xanthine oxidase (XO) was immobilized by self-assembly on peculiar naked iron oxide nanoparticles (surface active maghemite nanoparticles, SAMNs). The catalytic activity of the nanostructured conjugate (SAMN@XO) was assessed by optical spectroscopy and compared to the parent enzyme. SAMN@XO revealed improved catalytic features with respect to the parent enzyme and was applied for the electrochemical studies of xanthine. The present example supports the nascent knowledge concerning protein conjugation to nanoparticle as a means for the modulation of biological activity.

The polysaccharides in many plants are attracting worldwide attention because of their biological activities and medical properties, such as anti-viral, anti-oxidative, antichronic inflammation, anti-hypertensive, immunomodulation, and neuron-protective effects, as well as anti-tumor activity. Denodrobium species, a genus of the family orchidaceae, have been used as herbal medicines for hundreds of years in China due to their pharmacological effects. These effects include nourishing the Yin, supplementing the stomach, increasing body fluids, and clearing heat. Recently, numerous researchers have investigated possible active compounds in Denodrobium species, such as lectins, phenanthrenes, alkaloids, trigonopol A, and polysaccharides. Unlike those of other plants, the biological effects of polysaccharides in Dendrobium are a novel research field. In this review, we focus on these novel findings to give readers an overall picture of the intriguing therapeutic potential of polysaccharides in Dendrobium, especially those of the four commonly-used Denodrobium species: D. huoshanense, D. offininale, D. nobile, and D. chrysotoxum.

Two kinds of mesoporous HPW/SiO2 composites, which have been synthesized respectively by the amino-functionalized (AF) method and evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) method, have been used as catalysts in the oxidative desulfurization process of dibenzothiophene(DBT). The catalytic performance results show that the catalyst synthesized by EISA method holds higher catalytic activity than that synthesized by the AF method. The difference of catalytic activity can be attributed to the different synthesis mechanism of two kinds of composites. In the AF method, the bonding force between HPW and SiO2 is strong acid-base interaction, which damages the Keggin structure. Whereas in the EISA process, electrostatic force and hydrogen bonds between W=O groups and Si-OH groups are main bonding forces. The hydrogen bond holds the electron-withdrawing effect, which increases the activity of nonbonding W=O groups in HPW and then results in the enhancement of the catalytic activity.

Hierarchical ZSM-5 with a shell of stacked coffin-shaped crystals and a core of nanocrystal aggregates was synthesized by controlling the formation and self-assembly of zeolite precursors formed in the initial stage of crystallization. The formed hierarchical zeolite shows superior catalytic activity for reaction involving bulky molecules due to enhanced mass transport.
