Bismuth-based oxides have attractive photocatalytic properties under visible light. Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) particles as a visible light-responsive photocatalyst were prepared by a facile hydrothermal reaction method with the different solvent using Bi(NO3)3·5H2O and NH4VO3 as raw materials at 180°C for 18h. The as-prepared samples were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV-vis absorption spectra (UV-vis). The photocatalytic activity of BiVO4 crystals was evaluated using the photocatalytic oxidation of methylene blue (MB) at room temperature under visible light irradiation. It was found that the morphology and the band gap adsorption edge of BiVO4 are different with the different solvent. The widest band gap energy of BiVO4 obtained with ethylene glycol as solvent is 2.405eV. In addition, the BiVO4 powders exhibit a certain photocatalytic properties to photodegrade MB and the maximum photocatalytic degradation rate is 34% using BiVO4 prepared with water as solvent for 2h.

Hierarchical Ag/AgCl hetero-structures have been fabricated in high-yield by copying the natural architecture of a branch with green leaves, and exhibit higher photocatalytic activities than Ag/AgCl nanowires, AgCl nanoparticles, Ag nanowires, and N-doped TiO2 for the degradation of organic contaminants under visible light irradiation.

Ba0.6Mg0.4TiO3 (BMT) particles with different morphologies were synthesized through hydrothermal method and their optical and photocatalytic properties were investigated. Their crystal structure and microstructures were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). XRD patterns demonstrate that the as-prepared samples are tetragonal structure. FESEM shows that BMT crystals can be fabricated in different morphologies by simply manipulating the reaction parameters of hydrothermal process. The UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-vis DRS) reveal that the band gaps of BMT photocatalysts are about 2.37 - 2.51 eV. The as-prepared BMT photocatalysts exhibite higher photocatalytic activities in the degradation of methyl orange (MO) under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm) compared with traditional N-doped TiO2 (N-TiO2) and pure BaTiO3 (BTO). The high photocatalytic performance of BMT photocatalysts could be attributed to the recombination restraint of the e-/h+ pairs resulting from doping of Mg2+ ions. The influence of morphologies upon the photocatalytic properties of BMT was studied. Furthermore, BMT nanowires reveal the highest photocatalytic activity. Up to 94.0% MO is decolorized after visible light irradiation for 360 min.

Bismuth-based oxides have attractive photocatalytic properties under visible light. Bismuth tungstate(Bi2WO6) particles as a visible light-responsive photocatalyst were prepared by a facile hydrothermal reaction method with the different surfactant assisted using Bi(NO3)3·5H2O and Na2WO4 as raw materials at 180°C for 24h. The as-prepared samples were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV-vis absorption spectra (UV-vis). The photocatalytic activity of Bi2WO6 crystals was evaluated using the photocatalytic oxidation of rhodamine B (RhB) at room temperature under visible light irradiation. It was found that the morphology and the band gap adsorption edge of Bi2WO6 are different with the different surfactant assisted. The widest band gap energy of Bi2WO6 obtained with SDBS assisted is 2.624eV. In addition, the Bi2WO6 powders exhibit a certain photocatalytic properties to photodegrade RhB and the maximum photocatalytic degradation rate is 32.4% using Bi2WO6 prepared with PVP assisted for 2h.

Bifunctional Ag/AgCl/α-Co (OH)2 nanocomposite with selective adsorption and visible-light photocatalytic activities was prepared by a facile anion-exchange precipitation method via the reaction of α-Co (OH)2 and AgNO3, during which Cl anions in the interlayer of α-Co (OH)2 are consequently released and reacted with Ag ions to form AgCl on the surface of α-Co (OH)2 nanosheets. The prepared Ag/AgCl/α-Co (OH)2 nanocomposite was used to adsorb and photodegrade the organic dyes from water. Results indicated that the nanocomposite not only has highly selective adsorption ability but shows good visible-light photocatalytic abilities to organic dyes.
