This study proposes a conceptual framework that aims to gain insight into the integration of the sustainable development goals (SDG) within the Norwegian salmon value chain (NSVC). The proposed framework was developed by applying the systems engineering six-step method and validated through empirical findings from the NSVC. The framework’s application highlighted and analyzed the presence of the SDGs in corporate sustainability reports, academic curriculum, research, and governmental policies. This study uncovered the complexity-reduction elements within the system that drive SDG integration and assure their progress. The SDGs provide a global context for sustainability endeavors in the NSVC. A globally expanded value chain has an organic relationship with global sustainability terms and schemes. The existing practice of corporate sustainability annual reporting was found to be a significant channel for SDG communication. The novelty of this study was that it proposed a mind-map to understand SDG integration within an industrial value chain abstracted into three concepts: commitment, communication, and performance measurability.

The development of major economic sectors can provide the bedrock on which long-lasting national economic prosperity is formed. Iceland’s tourism sector is an example of a rapidly expanded industry in recent years, to the extent that it has become the largest sectoral contributor to the nation’s economy. The growth of the sector has led to a number of sustainability impacts, thus presenting opportunities and challenges in terms of meeting the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. Using the case study of Iceland, this paper aims to advance the conceptual understanding of the synergies and trade-offs between a nation’s tourism sector and performance across the 169 targets of the SDGs. Empirical results were derived from four theme-based focus groups comprised of expert participants, who were tasked with completing scoresheets concerning their perception of the extent of synergies and trade-offs for each target. The majority (126 in number) of the mean scoresheet outcomes for the SDG targets revealed neither synergies nor trade-offs. However, 32 synergies and 11 trade-offs were identified. Many of the target synergies related to new economic opportunities, such as jobs, employment, and training for young people. Target trade-offs tended to be environmental and social. In particular, concern was voiced about the greenhouse gas emissions of the Icelandic tourism sector, which derives from international aviation, cruise ships, and rental car usage. The outcomes of this study are of particular relevance to tourism companies, policy-makers, and governance institutions, all of whom are increasingly endeavouring to link their activities with the fulfilment of the SDGs, maximising synergies, mitigating the extent of any potential trade-offs, and potentially transforming trade-offs into synergies. Furthermore, the results are likely of interest to academics focused on researching the broad sustainability impacts of economic sectors and their contribution to meeting the visionary goals of the SDGs.

Improving the sustainable development of new ventures and helping them survive and develop in the entrepreneurial environment are important research issues. Business model innovation is considered as a potential way for new ventures to enhance their sustainable development capability and performance. Although previous studies have pointed out that there is a positive linear relationship between business model innovation and sustainable development, little research has found the nonlinear relationship between them, as well as the moderating effects of competitive strategy innovation and strategy flexibility. In this study, an empirical model was established to test our hypotheses and answer our research questions. Analysis of data collected from 326 questionnaires shows that an inverted-U relationship exists between business model innovation and sustainable development such that new ventures with low or high business model innovation have worse sustainable development than new ventures with appropriate business model innovation. Moreover, this paper finds that competitive strategy innovation and strategic flexibility positively moderate the inverted-U relationship between business model innovation and sustainable development of new ventures. From a theoretical perspective, this study offers a model with which to understand the impacts of business model innovation, and contributes significantly to the research on new ven- tures. From a practical perspective, this paper provides new insights into the management of new ventures and recommends several practical strategies for managers and practitioners.

Abstract To foster the sustainable development of renewable energy use in urban areas, we define an alternative, reciprocity-based, techno-economic system named SEAMS (“sharing energy amongst adjacent buildings”). We demonstrate its relevance through a statistical analysis of linear heat density across coastal cities from Northwestern mainland France, and a comparison of four implementations of three techno-economic systems within the perimeter of two adjacent building blocks, located in the city center of Lorient (Brittany). The SEAMS approach promises to address the multidimensional fragility issues currently surfacing with the conventional, market-based or redistribution-based, techno-economic systems, namely electricity and gas networks (EGN) or district heating and cooling networks (DHCN).

Considera-se a energia um dos principais pilares do padrão de vida das sociedades modernas. A energia é fator essencial para o desenvolvimento, pois tem capacidade de ampliar a eficiência e o rendimento do trabalho humano (Sachs, 2012). A adoção de energias alternativas tornou-se fator de segurança para o desenvolvimento sustentável (DS) de vários países (Romano, 2014). A partir deste entendimento, a pesquisa objetiva identificar as variáveis relacionadas aos cenários prospectivos da energia solar fotovoltaica, no estado do Ceará, a partir da perspectiva do DS. Para tanto, faz uso das dimensões do DS (Social, Cultural, Ecológica, Territorial, Econômica e Política), propostas por Sachs (2007, 2009) por considerar, assim como o autor, que as dimensões produzem um desafio para a elaboração de políticas públicas, e da noção de inovação sustentável. Foi desenvolvida pesquisa exploratória, de onde foram extraídas subcategorias de cinco entrevistas, com suporte em roteiro semiestruturado, realizadas com especialista do setor de Energia Solar Fotovoltaica, com suporte na Análise Temática de Conteúdo. Como resultado da codificação, foram identificadas 40 subcategorias que relacionam a ESF ao DS. A pesquisa revelou que a ESF se destaca como inovação sustentável e estratégia viável para o DS. Investimento em processos educativos favoráveis à adoção de outros padrões consumo, bem como amplo envolvimento de governos e empresas no alinhamento dessas estratégias na superação de entraves relacionados aos custos, à segurança política, à mão-de obra qualificada, por exemplo, representam caminhos para uma ampla disseminação da ESF no Estado. ABSTRACTEnergy is one of the main pillars of the standard of living in modern societies. Energy is an essential factor for development, as it has the capacity to increase the efficiency and performance of human work (Sachs, 2012). The adoption of alternative energies has become a security factor for the sustainable development of several countries (Romano, 2014). Based on this understanding, the research aims to identify the variables related to the prospective scenarios of photovoltaic solar energy, in the state of Ceará, from the perspective of the DS. To do so, it makes use of the dimensions of sustainable development (Social, Cultural, Ecological, Territorial, Economic and Political) proposed by Sachs (2007, 2009), for considering, as well as the author, that the dimensions produce a challenge for the elaboration of public policies, and more of the notion of sustainable innovation. Exploratory research was carried out, from which subcategories of five interviews were extracted, supported by a semi-structured script, accomplish with a specialist in the sector of Photovoltaic Solar Energy, supported by the Thematic Content Analysis. As a result of the codification, 40 subcategories were identified that relate the ESF to the DS. The research revealed that the ESF stands out as a sustainable innovation and viable strategy for sustainable development. Investment in educational processes favorable to the adoption of other consumption patterns, as well as broad involvement of governments and companies in the alignment of these strategies in overcoming obstacles related to costs, political security, to qualified labor, for example, represent paths for a wide dissemination of the FHS in the State.

Background: Addressing health in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) calls for intersectoral strategies that mutually enhance both health promotion and sustainable development. Health in All Policies (HiAP) approach aims to address this as well as promote ownership among key stakeholders. Kenya was at the forefront of adopting the SDGs and has committed to the HiAP approach in its Health Policy document for the period 2014-2030. This study aims to assess how the adoption of the HiAP approach can leverage on SDGs implementation in Kenya. Methods: This is an exploratory case study using qualitative data and some descriptive quantitative data. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD’s) eight building blocks for policy coherence on sustainable development was our guiding framework. Qualitative data was derived from a review of relevant peer-reviewed and grey literature, as well as 40 key informant interviews and analyzed in NVIVO. Quantitative data was accessed from the United Nations SDG indicator database and exported to Excel. Results: Kenya has expressed a strong political commitment to achieving the SDGs and has now adopted HiAP. The study showed that Kenya can leverage on local level implementation and long-term planning horizons that it currently has in place to address the SDGs as it rolls out the HiAP approach. The SDGs could be mapped out against the sectors outlined in the Adelaide statement on HiAP. It is also possible to map out how various ministries could coordinate to effectively address HiAP and SDGs concurrently. Funding for HiAP was not addressed in the OECD framework. Conclusion: Kenya can advance a HiAP approach by leveraging the ongoing SDGs implementation. This will be made possible by facilitating coordinated intersectoral action both at national and local level. Funding for HiAP is crucial for its propagation, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and can be considered in the budgetary allocations for SDGs.

Development must balance social, economic, and environmental sustainability; it is for this reason that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are integrated, in fact, action in one of them will affect outcomes in others. In consequence, research on the SDGs is broad, complex, and fragmented due to the great diversity of disciplines and approaches involved, making it difficult to obtain valuable and unbiased information for future studies. As a result, a comprehensive review of contributions could provide a comprehensive critical perspective. This article applies SciMAT software to analyze the evolution of this field of research through a systematic literature review of bibliographic records on the SDGs and a review based on bibliometric analysis of 10,272 selected records. Additionally, hidden themes and their development in this field from 1990 to 2020 have been identified to produce strategic diagrams, graphs of thematic evolution and performance indicators of the research field in different periods. The results obtained show a constantly evolving scientific field, from its initial focus on the millennium goals to the gradual inclusion of the current SDGs. They provide field experts with a comprehensive overview of the status quo and predict the dynamic directions of future research, serving as a basis for the development of new strategies for the implementation of the SDGs.

In this paper, the authors investigated the evolution of ERP-type integrated information systems and analysed the presentation of their main concepts and features, limited to the performance and sustainable development of the enterprise. Integrated ERP systems play an important role in managing and conducting the day-to-day business of an organization (irrespective of being small, medium or large companies). The research method used to justify the impact of ERP systems on the performance and sustainability of the organization was the archive analysis (review of the literature), doubled by a quantitative empirical research based on a questionnaire. The analysed information was collected from over 20 papers by Romanian and foreign authors, published in various scientific journals, specialized books and conference proceedings, as well as based on the answers received based on a questionnaire intended to prove that the integrated ERP systems contribute to improving the sustainable development and performance of the organization, by reducing costs and protecting the environment, increasing the quality of decision-making, productivity and data volume management. Following the study, the authors concluded that the evaluation of the processing of the volume of data generated by ERP systems, as well as the consistency, quality and clarity of information are representative factors on the impact of ERP systems on the sustainable development of organizations, in order to ensure the performance of the organization in the short, medium and long term.

Teaching methods for calculation and project development, focusing on theoretical principles and the reproduction of validated procedures, has been the traditional focus of engineering education. Innovation has been present in universities, mainly in the creation of processes and technologies for the development of products, services, or companies, based on entrepreneurship. Training in innovation has been limited to interested students, and not encouraged for all students, despite how relevant it is for current and future global development. According to the literature research and the opinion of the experts, this research identifies the characteristics of innovation that engineering students should acquire, in response to the challenges of engineering in the 21st century, considering as a basis the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in the context of the increasingly demanding requirements of industry 4.0. The identification of the relevant aspects in innovation were categorized according to the expertise and academic performance of the authors. In addition to this, the investigation of the representative elements of Industry 4.0, and the incorporation of Sustainable Development Goals, establish the basis of this study to guide the development of innovation skills in the process of engineering student education. Furthermore, in order to integrate innovation skills, elements of Industry 4.0 and aspects of Sustainable Development Goals, the concept of competence is introduced, with a conceptual structure that considers knowledge, attitude and performance context, thus this research provides a conceptual framework for those interested in constructing innovation skills in engineering, oriented towards the development of an innovation culture and mentality, as part of the expected professional performance.
