In this work, we study the field emission properties of a single vertical carbon nanotube with cathode radius changing. The carbon nanotube is considered as purely perfect conductor, and the anode and cathode are modeled as discs. The radius of anode is kept as 24m, then the radius of cathode is changed from 24 m to 1 m. The emitter of that CNT consists of a hemispherical cap of 4 nm radius (r) on top of a cylinder height of 2 m (h). The distance from anode to cathode is w=h+20m. The overall surface area of the CNT and cathode are all grounded, and the anode plate has a constant potential value of 100 V. The distribution of potential and electric field, field emission current are obtained by simulating with the help of COMSOL Multiphysics 4.3b electrostatics module. We find that with cathode radius decrease, the electric field strength over the surface of carbon nanotube (CNT) strengthening and field emission current increase.

The Stability

The electronic and field emission properties of the fullerene end-functionalized zinc oxide nanotube (ZnONT) are investigated by density functional theory (DFT) to search for novel field emitter nano material. The interaction energies of ZnONT/fullerenes complexes gradually increase, with increasing the nanotube lengths which indicate that ZnONTs with higher lengths could improve the stability of the complexes. The band gaps of connected construction of fullerene molecules with ZnONTs gradually reduced by increasing the tube length, but were not sensitive to the tubes diameter. It is found that the ionization potentials of ZnONT/fullerenes complexes mainly decrease compared to that of pristine nanotube in the presence of 0, 0.002, 0.004[Formula: see text]a.u. electric field. The reduction of the ionization potential means the enhancement of the field emission properties of ZnONT/fullerenes complexes compared with simple ZnONT and fullerene molecules. The calculations show that the combination of ZnONT with fullerene molecules indeed improves the field emission by controlling the tube size and electric field strength.

ABSTRACTOur simulations predict that boron-nitride (BN) doping in carbon nanotubes can greatly improve the field emission properties of these systems. The intrinsic electric field associated with the polarity of the B-N bond enhances the emitted current density through a reduction of the work function at the tip. Using a combination of real-space and plane-wave ab initio methods, we show that this effect is present in both coaxial (BN@C) and linear (BN/C) nanotubular assemblies. While in the coaxial geometry the improvement amounts to a factor of five, the current density is predicted to increase by up to two orders of magnitude in BN/C superlattices.

Graphdiyne–ZnO composite is constructed to investigate field-emission. We hope the tip effect of graphdiyne can be strengthened by doping ZnO. We find that the effective movement of the Fermi level and the dwindling of band gap have contributed to the modification of the electronic structures of this composite significantly with increase in the electric field. The high binding energy indicates that the composite model is very stable. In addition, the ionization energies and work functions decrease linearly with the increasing electric field, which represents an improvement of field-emission properties. It implies that graphdiyne–ZnO composite may become a promising material for field-emission.
