Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) are embedded in Er3+/Nd3+ co-doped lithium niobate tellurite glasses of the form (68-x)TeO2-15Li2CO3-15Nb2O5-1Er2O3-1Nd2O3-(x)AgCl with x = 1,2 and 3 mol% via conventional melt-quenching technique. The ultrasonic attenuation shows the rate of sound energy reduction when an ultrasonic wave is propagating in a medium which is the lithium niobate tellurite glasses. The glass attenuation depends on the grain size, viscous friction, crystal structure, porosity and hardness. The existence of Ag NPs with an average size of 3.7 nm is confirmed using TEM analysis.

Spectral features modification of rare earth (RE) doped tellurite glasses via controlled manipulation of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) is the current challenge in achieving enhanced lasing action. Triggering the localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of NPs in the glass generates tremendous applied interests especially in solid state lasers and nanophotonics. Despite several promising features of RE doped zinc-boro-tellurite glass, the low absorption and emission cross-section of RE ions prohibit them from fabricating efficient lasers. This drawback needed to overcome and significant enhancement of spectral features is required. Co-doping by rare earths and/or embedding metallic NPs (acts as sensitizer) are demonstrated to be the alternative route to surmount such shortcomings. Series of glass samples with composition 74TeO2–15B2O3–10ZnO– 1Sm2O3 – (x)Ag, where 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.1 mol% (in excess) are prepared using melt quenching method and the impacts of silver (Ag) NPs concentrations in altering their photoluminescence properties are inspected. The XRD spectra confirmed the amorphous nature of prepared glasses and the presence of Ag NPs are evidenced in EDX spectra. TEM micrographs revealed the distribution of Ag NPs with average size 7.2 nm. Absorption spectra revealed eight bands which most intense between 6F11/2 and 6F1/2. Photoluminescence spectra exhibited three prominent peaks corresponding to the transition from the excited state 4G5/2 to 6H5/2, 6H7/2, and 6H9/2 states, respectively. Our observation may be useful for the development of tellurite glass based nanophotonic devices.

Tellurite glasses of varying Er3+/Nd3+ concentration were successfully prepared by melt-quenching method. The X-Ray diffraction pattern was determined by using Siemens Diffractometer D5000 while the optical properties were measured using Shimadzu 3101 pc UV-VIS NIR scanning spectrophotometer. It was found that the diffraction patterns of all samples showed glasses characteristics. The optical band gap, Eopt¬ increased proportionally with the content of Er¬2O3 but Urbach energy, ∆E decreased due to the increasing Er2O3 contents.

Samarium-doped tellurite glass embedded with silver nanoparticles are synthesized by melt quenching technique and optically characterized. The effect of silver nanoparticles on the luminescent properties of the samarium-doped sodium tellurite glass is investigated. Upon pumping with 406 nm radiation, it is found that there are four distinctive emission bands centered at 562 nm, 599 nm, 645 nm and 705 nm. In the presence of silver nanoparticles in the glass substrates, we observe significant enhancement in the intensity of these emission bands. The enhancement tends to increase with the increasing of silver nanoparticles concentration. The mechanism of luminescence enhancement is discussed in terms of localized surface plasmon resonance.

A plasmonic effect of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) is studied. The solutions of silver nitrate in isopropanol, ethylene glycol, or in TiO2sol were examined as possible precursors for Ag NPs formation. The solutions were dip-coated on the top of the porous TiO2layer. The results of optical measurements confirmed the formation of Ag NPs throughout the porous TiO2layer after the heat treatment of the layers above 100°C. Heat treatment at 220°C was found to be optimal regarding the formation of the Ag NPs. The porous TiO2layers with Ag NPs have been evaluated also in DSSC by measuring current-voltage characteristics and the external quantum efficiency of the cells. In addition, the amount of adsorbed dye has been determined to prove the plasmonic effect in the cells. TheI-Vcharacterization of the DSSCs revealed an increase of the short circuit current in the presence of Ag NPs although the amount of the attached dye molecules decreased. These results confirm that the performance enhancement is related to the plasmonic effect. However, neither a thin sol-gel TiO2layer nor poly(4-vinylpyridine) shells provide effective protection for the long term stability of the Ag NPs against the corrosion ofI3-/I-based electrolyte.

Erbium-doped tellurite glass containing copper nanoparticles showed multi-band emission of one particular transition (4I9/2 →4I15/2, at 980 nm) due to electron-lattice coupling.
