The first water-soluble biphen[3]arene was synthesized. Its pH-responsive host–guest complexation with secondary ammonium salts in water was investigated. This novel recognition motif was further used in controllable self-assembly and controlled release.

A water-soluble hybrid[4]arene was synthesized for the first time and its pH-responsive host–guest complexation with paraquat in water was investigated. This new host–guest recognition motif was further applied in the construction of a supra-amphiphile.

A gas and photo dual-responsive host–guest recognition was established in an aqueous medium. This recognition motif was further applied for the construction of a supra-amphiphile, which reversibly self-assembled into vesicles upon UV/vis irradiation or bubbling with N2/CO2.

A dual-responsive supra-amphiphile was constructed based on a water-soluble pillar[7]arene and a pyrene-containing guest. The self-assembly morphology of this supra-amphiphile could be adjusted by changing pH or irradiation by UV light.

A novel pH-responsive molecular recognition motif was built between an anionic carboxylate group modified resorcin[4]arene and paraquat in water. We then employed it to fabricate a supra-amphiphile for controllable self-assembly.
