The influence of electrostatic heterogeneity on the electric-field-induced destabilization of thin ionic liquid (IL) films is investigated to control spatial ordering and to reduce the lateral dimension of structures forming on the films.

The intercalation of hydrogen ions and lithium ions in MoO3 films is realized by acidic ionic liquid gating, which modifies the electronic and optical properties of MoO3 films, is promising for designing multifunctional devices.

AbstractThis paper reports experimental work using an electric field close to a substrate to induce morphological patterns in a thin polymer film. The film was spin-coated onto a glass wafer, and subsequently heated to above its glass transition temperature to allow viscous flow. An electric field was applied by two parallel electrodes spacing 10 mm apart. The initially flat polymer/air interface lost stability and formed islands. The self-assembled islands exhibited a narrow size distribution and demonstrated spatial ordering. We attribute the pattern formation to the minimization of combined interface energy and electrostatic energy.
