Flexible construction of permanently stored supramolecular chirality with stimulus-responsiveness remains a big challenge. Herein, we describe an efficient method to realize the transfer and storage of chirality in intrinsically achiral films of a side-chain polymeric liquid crystal system by combining chiral doping and cross-linking strategy. Even the helical structure was destroyed by UV light irradiation, the memorized chiral information in the covalent network enabled complete self-recovery of the original chiral superstructure. These results allowed the building of a novel chiroptical switch without any additional chiral source in multiple types of liquid crystal polymers, which may be one of the competitive candidates for use in stimulus-responsive chiro-optical devices.

Organosilicon polymer materials play an important role in certain applications due to characteristics of much lower glass transition temperatures (Tg), viscosities, surface energy, as well as good mechanical, thermal stabilities, and insulation performance stemming from the higher bond energy and the larger bond angles of the adjacent silicon-oxygen bond. This critical review highlights developments in the synthesis, structure, and phase transition behaviors of polysiloxane-based side chain liquid crystal polymers (PSCLCPs) of linear and cyclic polysiloxanes containing homopolymers and copolymers. Detailed synthetic strategies are elaborated, and the relationship between molecular structures and liquid crystalline phase transition behaviors is systematically discussed, providing theoretical guidance on the molecular design of the materials.

In this paper we consider the behavior of a number of side chain liquid crystal polymers having the same mesogenic group and relate their liquid crystalline behavior to their polarization and nonlinear optical properties. We show that the liquid crystallinity of the materials results in an enhancement of the polar order over that of isotropic materials, in qualitative agreement with molecular statistical models.

A series of new main-chain liquid-crystal polymers (LCPs) were prepared from sebacoyl chloride (SD) and various amount of 4, 4-Dihydroxy-2, 2-dimethyl Benzalazine (DDBA) and isosorbide (ISO). The liquid crystal (LC) properties were investigated by polarized optical microscope (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction measurements. P1 exhibited a typical nematic thread texture, which contains no ISO. P2-P7 are Sc* and N LCPs, which exhibited broken fan-shaped texture and droplet texture. The introduction of chiral units into the polymers led to a change of mesomorphase, as compared with P1.

The synthesis and free-radical polymerization of the acrylates monomer containing photosensitive chalcone group and the acrylates monomer containing mesogenic group are described in this paper. The monomers and polymers were characterized by FT-IR and 1 H NMR spectra. The thermal properties of polymers were measured by DSC and the liquid crystalline texture was measured by POM. And the results indicated that the polymers showed typical nematic phase and liquid crystal temperature range was 74 °C-103 °C.

ABSTRACTThis study focuses on the photo-polymerization of a fluorinated monoacrylate monomer and aliphatic analog within a room temperature smectic liquid crystal (LC) in an effort to understand how factors such as LC order, monomer segregation, and monomer chemical structure affects the polymerization mechanism in polymer stabilized liquid crystalline systems (PSLC). Specifically, a fluorinated monoacrylate exhibits significantly enhanced polymerization rates when compared to an aliphatic monoacrylate. Moreover, this rate enhancement is particularly pronounced in the smectic phase of the LC, where the fluorinated monoacrylate displays a polymerization rate in the smectic phase that is over three times faster than the aliphatic monoacrylate in the smectic phase. Also the fluorinated monoacrylate exhibits enhanced segregation between the smectic layers of the LC both before and after polymerization, whereas the aliphatic monoacrylate phase separates during polymerization. The results of this study demonstrate how changes in the monomer chemical structure (i.e. fluorination) can significantly impact the polymerization mechanism and segregation in polymer stabilized systems. This study also offers the potential to further the understanding of tailoring these unique systems for display applications.
