Composites based on polypropylene (PP) and sisal fiber (SF) were prepared by melt blending. Sisal fiber content was 30 phr. Organoclay (OMMT; Cloisite®30B) (1-7 phr) was incorporated into the composites. In addition, maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) was used as a compatibilizer to enhance the interfacial adhesion between PP matrix and sisal fiber and also to improve the dispersion of the organoclay in PP matrix. The addition of OMMT had insignificantly affected mechanical properties of SF/PP composites. However, flame retardancy and thermal stability of SF/PP composites were improved dramatically with the presence of OMMT.

The aim of this study was to study the effect of ZnO concentration on the morphology, mechanical, and crystallization behaviors of iPP. Three compositions of iPP/mZnO and iPP/nZnO composites were prepared in a co-rotational twin-screw extruder machine with ZnO content of 2 wt%, 5 wt%, and 8 wt%. Tensile tests showed that the tensile strength at yield and tensile modulus of the composites tended to increase with increasing contents of mZnO/nZnO particles. This improvement in the tensile properties was attributed to good interfacial adhesion between the fillers and the matrix, as evidenced by TEM examination. The tensile strength at yield and tensile modulus values of iPP/nZnO composite with the addition of 2–8 wt% nZnO are higher than those of virgin iPP, and even higher than those of iPP/mZnO composite with the addition of 2–8 wt% mZnO. The non-isothermal crystallization behavior of iPP/mZnO and iPP/nZnO composites was investigated using DSC. The results indicated that the interfacial interaction between iPP and mZnO/nZnO increased the crystallization temperature when the content of ZnO is 5 wt%.

The effects of surface treatment of a carbon fiber (CF) by Polyethylene-polyamine (PEPA) on the interfacial adhesion behavior and morphology of polypropylene/polystyrene (PP/PS) matrix blends filled CF composites were investigated. Effects of surface treated a commercial CF on mechanical properties are studied. Contact angle was measured to examine the changes in wettability of the carbon fiber. The chemical and morphological changes were characterized by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). PP/PS/CF composites were fabricated with and without PEPA treatment, and their interlaminar fracture toughnesses were compared. The results showed that the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of composites has been greatly improved filled PEPA modification CF. The water contact angle of resin sample decreased 50% after addition of PEPA surface treated CF.
