In this paper, a new kind of chitosan schiff base and its zinc complexes were prepared. Chitosan schiff base (CS-DBSB) was obtained when 3, 5-Di-tert-butyl salicylaldehyde was introduced to the C-2 nitrogen position of chitosan. Its zinc complex of CS-DBSB (CS-DBSB-Zn) was also prepared. The structure and performance of physicochemical characteristics of CS-DBSB and CS-DBSB-Zn were examined by FT-IR, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric (TG). The thermal behaviors of CS-DBSB and CS-DBSB-Zn were described. TG curves presented three events including water loss, decomposition of the polysaccharide generating a carbonaceous residue that burns at higher temperatures.

A series of novel 1,9-diazodipyrrins (4) were readily synthesized by reacting aryldiazonium salts with 5-aryldipyrromethanes under both acidic and basic conditions. The zinc complex of 1,9-diphenylazodipyrrin (5aZn) was confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis, and 1,9-diazodipyrrins and their zinc and nickel complexes (5M) were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, IR, UV–vis, and MS. All of the metal complexes absorb almost all colours of the rainbow; the absorption maximums are >650 nm and the half-band widths are over 100 nm. The fluorescence of the zinc complexes of 1,9-diphenylazodipyrrin (5aZn) and 1,9-di(2-iodophenylazo)dipyrrin (5cZn) were also explored.

Dipyrrins are valuable precursors to dyes [dipyrrinatoboron difluoride, bis(dipyrrinato)-zinc(II) complexes] and serve as ligands in a variety of self-assembled materials. Six new dipyrrin-containing architectures have been synthesized. The architectures include bis(dipyrrinato) complexes containing copper(II) or palladium(II), a dipyrrin bearing a protected phosphonic acid unit, a porphyrin bearing two dipyrrins in a trans configuration, a linear diphenylethyne-linked dipyrromethane-dipyrrin building block, and a triad composed of two zinc porphyrins joined via an intervening bis(dipyrrinato)copper(II) complex. Two porphodimethenatozinc complexes were prepared and found to have Φ f ≤ 0.002 (in toluene at room temperature), which is substantially less than the analogous bis(dipyrrinato)zinc complexes. Taken together, the syntheses described herein should broaden access to dipyrrins for use as complexation motifs in supramolecular chemistry and as pigments in light-harvesting applications.

Synthesis and characterization of a series of new amino-phenol/naphthol ligands (L1,2-H) have been developed and their respective zinc complexes (1 and 2-Zn) have been synthesized.
