The structure of 1,8-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene has been studied in detail in the gas phase and the solid state by a combined GED/MS method and by XRD of a single crystal. Aryl⋯aryl interactions are discussed in terms of dispersive forces.

Inversion of the cyclohexane ring system in the solid state has been directly observed in a 19F nmr study of solid fluorocyclohexane. The barrier to ring inversion in the orientationally disordered solid phase, ΔG≠e→a = 44.1 ± 0.9 kJ mol−1 at 263 K is found to be only slightly larger than the value previously reported for a CFCl3 solution of fluorocyclohexane. The population of the equatorial conformation is slightly favored over the axial conformation with K = Pe/Pa = 1.56 at 281 K; similar values have been obtained in CFCl3 and in the gas phase.

Derivatives of 1-aza-2-bora-3-oxacyclopentane are easily prepared by cleavage of the N-Si and O-Si bonds in disilylated ethanolamines with halogenoboranes. The B-halogeno and B-hydro compounds with NH and N-CH3 moieties are associated in the solid state, and in part also in the liquid and gas phase. In the solid phase hexahydroborazine derivatives are formed by association. Further compounds include B-N-Si-substituted rings and interlinked bicyclic systems.

<div>We report the first single crystal structures of hypochlorite and hypobromite salts, including hydrated sodium hypochlorite - a ubiquitous bleaching and disinfection agent in use for almost 200 years. The structures represent the first characterization of fundamentally important hypochlorite and hypobromite anions in the solid state, by X-ray crystallography and are supported by Raman spectroscopy on individual crystals. The structural analysis provides insight into supramolecular chemistry of the hypohalite ions in the hydrated environment of the NaOCl.5H2O and NaOBr.5H2O solid salts, and reveals measured Cl-O and Br-O bond lengths of 1.69 A and 1.82 A, respectively, which are significantly longer than those for corresponding higher-valence oxoanions, and in agreement with the values spectroscopically determined for hypohalous acids and corresponding oxides in the gas phase.<br></div>

Abstract The formation reaction of Mg2Mo3O11 from MgO (single crystal) and MoO3 (pellet) has been investigated in the temperature range 873-973 K.Supported by an analysis of the transport properties a mechanism is proposed involving a unidirectional transport of Mo6+ via V6′Mo and of oxygen via gas phase. The transport properties of MgMoO4 (the other intermediate compound in the system MgO-MoO3) were also studied and the results were found to agree with the mechanism observed in a previous work on the basis of kinetic and structural considerations.

Variable-temperature solid-state 31P, 15N, and 2H NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry studies of the 1:1 adduct of silver nitrate and triphenylphosphine (AgNO3·PPh3) reveal a solid–solid phase transition at 300 K. The principal components of the phosphorus and nitrogen chemical shift tensors for both phases are determined from NMR spectra of MAS and stationary samples. In addition, the indirect spin-spin coupling between phosphorus and the naturally occurring isotopes of silver (107Ag and 109Ag) are resolved. Experimental 2H NMR line shapes for silver nitrate perdeuterated triphenylphosphine are those characteristic of rigid phenyl groups at temperatures above and below the phase-transition temperature. Powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction data for AgNO3·PPh3 obtained at 193, 295, and 313 K are reported; data obtained at 193 and 295 K are almost identical, but are significantly different from those obtained at 313 K and from an earlier single-crystal X-ray diffraction investigation performed at 298 K. All X-ray studies found that AgNO3·PPh3 crystallizes in the monoclinic form, space group P21/c.Key words: 1:1 silver nitrate triphenylphosphine adduct, solid-state NMR, X-ray diffraction, phase transition.
