In this paper, we report a simple yet powerful synthetic method for obtaining monodispersed silver nanoparticles by direct thermal decomposition of two materials — one is silver acetate as a source of the metal core and the other is myristic acid as a capping agent. The reaction was performed at 250°C, the boiling point of myristic acid, without additional solvent. The nucleation and growth of the particles were monitored by dynamic light scattering in order to optimize the reaction time. By this simple procedure, we could obtain uniformly sized Ag nanoparticles with the average diameter of 4.8 ± 0.1 nm. Although the particles were synthesized at high temperature, the ligand exchange between myristates and alkanethiolates can be achieved at room temperature. Significant characteristics of Ag nanoparticles attributed to localized surface plasmons were investigated.

The title compound, C25H22NO2P, was synthesized in high yield by a three-component Kabachnik–Fields reaction of diphenylphosphine oxide, salicylaldehyde and aniline in dry toluene at room temperature. It precipitates as racemic crystals, in which strong hydrogen bonds between the hydroxy group and the P=O group of a neighbouring molecule form one-dimensional heterochiral chains along the crystallographicaaxis, with an O...O separation of 2.568 (2) Å. The pseudo-tetrahedral environment of the P atom is distorted, with O—P—C bond angles significantly larger than the C—P—C angles.

Carissa carandas L. is traditionally used as antibacterial medicine and accumulates many antioxidant phytochemicals. Here, we expand this traditional usage with the green biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) achieved using a Carissa carandas L. leaf extract as a reducing and capping agent. The green synthesis of AgNPs reaction was carried out using 1mM silver nitrate and leaf extract. The effect of temperature on the synthesis of AgNPs was examined using room temperature (25 °C) and 60 °C. The silver nanoparticles were formed in one hour by stirring at room temperature. In this case, a yellowish brown colour was developed. The successful formation of silver nanoparticles was confirmed by UV–Vis, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The characteristic peaks of the UV-vis spectrum and XRD confirmed the synthesis of AgNPs. The biosynthesised AgNPs showed potential antioxidant activity through DPPH assay. These AgNPs also exhibited potential antibacterial activity against human pathogenic bacteria. The results were compared with the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of the plant extract, and clearly suggest that the green biosynthesized AgNPs can constitute an effective antioxidant and antibacterial agent.

AbstractFormaldehyde (HCHO) is the main source of indoor air pollutant. HCHO sensors are therefore of paramount importance for timely detection in daily life. However, existing sensors do not meet the stringent performance targets, while deactivation due to sensing detection at room temperature, for example, at extremely low concentration of formaldehyde (especially lower than 0.08 ppm), is a widely unsolved problem. Herein, we present the Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) sensitized dispersed In2O3 nanograin via a low-fabrication-cost hydrothermal strategy, where the Ag NPs reduces the apparent activation energy for HCHO transporting into and out of the In2O3 nanoparticles, while low concentrations detection at low working temperature is realized. The pristine In2O3 exhibits a sluggish response (Ra/Rg = 4.14 to 10 ppm) with incomplete recovery to HCHO gas. After Ag functionalization, the 5%Ag-In2O3 sensor shows a dramatically enhanced response (135) with a short response time (102 s) and recovery time (157 s) to 1 ppm HCHO gas at 30 °C, which benefits from the Ag NPs that electronically and chemically sensitize the crystal In2O3 nanograin, greatly enhancing the selectivity and sensitivity.
