The large-scale synthesis of high-quality thin films with extensive tunability derived from molecular building blocks will advance the development of artificial solids with designed functionalities. We report the synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) porphyrin polymer films with wafer-scale homogeneity in the ultimate limit of monolayer thickness by growing films at a sharp pentane/water interface, which allows the fabrication of their hybrid superlattices. Laminar assembly polymerization of porphyrin monomers could form monolayers of metal-organic frameworks with Cu2+ linkers or covalent organic frameworks with terephthalaldehyde linkers. Both the lattice structures and optical properties of these 2D films were directly controlled by the molecular monomers and polymerization chemistries. The 2D polymers were used to fabricate arrays of hybrid superlattices with molybdenum disulfide that could be used in electrical capacitors.

The use of nanocrystal (NC) building blocks to create metamaterials is a powerful approach to access emergent materials. Given the immense library of materials choices, progress in this area for anisotropic NCs is limited by the lack of co-assembly design principles. Here, we use a rational design approach to guide the co-assembly of two such anisotropic systems. We modulate the removal of geometrical incompatibilities between NCs by tuning the ligand shell, taking advantage of the lock-and-key motifs between emergent shapes of the ligand coating to subvert phase separation. Using a combination of theory, simulation, and experiments, we use our strategy to achieve co-assembly of a binary system of cubes and triangular plates and a secondary system involving two two-dimensional (2D) nanoplates. This theory-guided approach to NC assembly has the potential to direct materials choices for targeted binary co-assembly.

In the past few decades, enormous efforts have been made to synthesize covalent polymer nano/microstructured materials with specific morphologies, due to the relationship between their structures and functions. Up to now, the formation of most of these structures often requires either templates or preorganization in order to construct a specific structure before, and then the subsequent removal of previous templates to form a desired structure, on account of the lack of “self-error-correcting” properties of reversible interactions in polymers. The above processes are time-consuming and tedious. A template-free, self-assembled strategy as a “bottom-up” route to fabricate well-defined nano/microstructures remains a challenge. Herein, we introduce the recent progress in template-free, self-assembled nano/microstructures formed by covalent two-dimensional (2D) polymers, such as polymer capsules, polymer films, polymer tubes and polymer rings.

We report the first transformation between crystalline vinylene-linked two-dimensional (2D) polymers and crystalline cyclobutane-linked three-dimensional (3D) polymers. Specifically, absorption-edge irradiation of the 2D poly(arylenevinylene) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) results in topological [2+2] cycloaddition cross-linking the π-stacked layers in 3D COFs. The reaction is reversible and heating to 200°C leads to a cycloreversion while retaining the COF crystallinity. The resulting difference in connectivity is manifested in the change of mechanical and electronic properties, including exfoliation, blue-shifted UV-Vis absorption, altered luminescence, modified band structure and different acid-doping behavior. The Li-impregnated 2D and 3D COFs show a significant ion conductivity of 1.8×10−4 S/cm and 3.5×10−5 S/cm, respectively. Even higher room temperature proton conductivity of 1.7×10-2 S/cm and 2.2×10-3 S/cm was found for H2SO4-treated 2D and 3D COFs, respectively.

With regard to crystal engineering, building block or modular assembly methodologies have shown great success in the design and construction of metal–organic coordination polymers. The critical factor for the construction of coordination polymers is the rational choice of the organic building blocks and the metal centre. The reaction of Zn(OAc)2·2H2O (OAc is acetate) with 3-nitrobenzoic acid (HNBA) and 4,4′-bipyridine (4,4′-bipy) under hydrothermal conditions produced a two-dimensional zinc(II) supramolecular architecture,catena-poly[[bis(3-nitrobenzoato-κ2O,O′)zinc(II)]-μ-4,4′-bipyridine-κ2N:N′], [Zn(C7H4NO4)2(C10H8N2)]nor [Zn(NBA)2(4,4′-bipy)]n, which was characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The ZnIIions are connected by the 4,4′-bipy ligands to form a one-dimensional zigzag chain and the chains are decorated with anionic NBA ligands which interact further through aromatic π–π stacking interactions, expanding the structure into a threefold interpenetrated two-dimensional supramolecular architecture. The solid-state fluorescence analysis indicates a slight blue shift compared with pure 4,4′-bipyridine and HNBA.
