The fluorination of dendritic structures has attracted special attention in terms of self-assembly processes and biological applications. The presence of fluorine increases the hydrophobicity of the molecule, resulting in a better interaction with biological membranes and viability. In addition, the development of 19F magnetic resonance imaging (19F-MRI) has greatly increased interest in the design of new fluorinated structures with specific properties. Here, we present the synthesis of new water-soluble fluorinated carbosilane dendrons containing fluorinated chains in different positions on the skeleton, focal point or surface, and their preliminary supramolecular aggregation studies. These new dendritic systems could be considered as potential systems to be employed in drug delivery or gene therapy and monitored by 19F-MRI.

In this paper, we report on the self-assembly of water-soluble N,N′-di(N,N′-dimethyl-dodecane-1,12-diamide)-perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic diimide (PDDoAM) in formic acid and chloride salts for producing varied nano-aggregates with different optical properties. Interestingly, the self-assembly can lead to nanocubic, microsheet and “tower-like” nanostructures respectively, as demonstrated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images. The optical properties of molecular aggregates were investigated by means of Confocal Raman Microscopy, indicating the morphologies and fluorescence of these nanomaterials are dependent on acids, acid concentrations and casting methods.

This paper discusses the use of N,N′-disubstituted-dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazines with typical Vibration-Induced-Emission (VIE) properties for imaging amyloid β (Aβ) fibrils, which are a signature of neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. A water-soluble VIEgen with a red fluorescence emission shows a pronounced, blue-shifted emission with Aβ peptide monomers and fibrils. The enhancement in blue fluorescence can be ascribed to the restriction of the molecular vibration by selectively binding to Aβ. We determine an increasing blue-to-red emission ratio of the VIEgen with both the concentration and fibrogenesis time of Aβ, thereby enabling a ratiometric detection of Aβ in its different morphological forms. Importantly, the VIEgen was proven to be suitable for the fluorescence imaging of small Aβ plaques in the hippocampus of a transgenic mouse brain (five months old), with the blue and red emissions well overlapped on the Aβ. This research offers a new rationale to design molecular VIE probes for biological applications.

Herein we present the synthesis and the photophysical evaluation of water-soluble chiral ligands (2·(R,R) and 2·(S,S)) and their application in the formation of lanthanide directed self-assembled structures. These pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic amide based ligands, possessing two naphthalene moieties as sensitising antennae, that can be used to populate the excited state of lanthanide ions, were structurally modified using 3-propanesultone and caesium carbonate, allowing for the incorporation of a water-solubilising sulfonate motif. We show, using microwave synthesis, that Eu(iii) forms chiral complexes in 1 : 3 (M : L) stoichiometries (Eu·[2·(R,R)]3 and Eu·[2·(S,S)]3) with these ligands, and that the red Eu(iii)-centred emission arising from these complexes has quantum yields (Φtot) of 12% in water. Both circular dichroism (CD) and circular polarised luminescence (CPL) analysis show that the complexes are chiral; giving rise to characteristic CD and CPL signatures for both the Λ and the Δ complexes, which both possess characteristic luminescence dissymmetry factors (glum), describing the structure in solution. The self-assembly process was also monitored in situ by observing the changes in the ligand absorption and fluorescence emission, as well as in the Eu(iii) luminescence. The change, fitted using non-linear regression analysis, demonstrated high binding affinity for Eu(iii) which in part can be assigned to being driven by additional hydrophobic effects. Moreover, using CD spectroscopy, the changes in the chiroptical properties of both (2·(R,R) and 2·(S,S)) were monitored in real time. Fitting the changes in the CD spectra allowed for the step-wise binding constants to be determined for these assemblies; these matched well with those determined from both the ground and the excited state changes. Both the ligands and the Eu(iii) complexes were then used in the formation of hydrogels; the Eu(iii)-metallogels were luminescent to the naked-eye.
