The axially chiral bis(α-amino acid)s cis-2 and trans-2 as possible building blocks for polymeric structures of novel type of helicity were prepared. Their configuration has been determined by NMR spectroscopy and, in the case of the trans-isomer, confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Analogous pair of stereoisomeric diacids cis-3 and trans-3, devoid of the amino groups, was also prepared and their configuration assigned. The observed differences in the NMR spectra of cis- and trans-isomers of 2 and 3 are discussed from the viewpoint of their different symmetry properties.

Design and construction of automated synthesizers using the tilted plate centrifugation technology is described. Wash solutions and reagents common to all synthesized species are delivered automatically through a 96-channel distributor connected to a gear pump through two four-port selector valves. Building blocks and other specific reagents are delivered automatically through banks of solenoid valves, positioned over the individual wells of the microtiterplate. These instruments have the following capabilities: Parallel solid-phase oligonucleotide synthesis in the wells of polypropylene microtiter plates, which are slightly tilted down towards the center of rotation, thus generating a pocket in each well, in which the solid support is collected during centrifugation, while the liquid is expelled from the wells. Eight microtiterplates are processed simultaneously, providing thus a synthesizer with a capacity of 768 parallel syntheses. The instruments are capable of unattended continuous operation, providing thus a capacity of over two millions 20-mer oligonucleotides in a year.

A POM - based organice - inorganic hybrid compound with the chemical formula of[Cu (phen)2]3[W6O19] (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) (1) has been hydrothermally synthesized andstructurally characterized by the elemental analysis, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic space groupC2/c witha=18.319(4) Å,b= 17.311(4) Å,c= 22.248(4) Å,β= 112.40(3) o,V= 6523(2) Å3,Z= 4, R1= 0.0448, andwR2=0.1218. Compound 1 consists of the [W6O19]3-building blocks and [Cu (phen)2]+metal organic cationic moieties, which are packed together via the extensive hydrogen-bonding interactions to form a three-dimensional supramolecular framework. The adsorption of methylene blue (MB) under UV irradiation with 1 as the heterogeneous adsorbent has been investigated, showing a good adsorptive property of 1 for MB degradation.

Abstract Acylic silylated phosphazenes of the type HN(PR2NSiMe3)2 (1) react quantitatively with molecules MMe3 (M = Al, Ga, In) under ring formation and CH4 evolution. The ring compounds N(PPh2NSiMe3)2AlMe2 (2 a) and N(PPh2NSiMe3)2InMe2 (4 a) have been investiga­ ted by X-ray structure determination. 2a and 4a crystallize in the space groups P 1̄ and P 31, respectively; they show different conformations regarding the cyclohexane framework. NMR spectroscopy of the nuclei in the chelating phosphazene ligand indicates decreasing Lewis acidity of the metal containing fragments in the series AlMe2 ≥ GaMe2 > InMe2.

Y2-xLnxO3 (Ln 4 Ce, Pr, Nd, Eu, Gd, Ho, and Er) powders obtained by propellant synthesis have been characterized using small-angle x-ray scattering, wide-angle x-ray scattering, and transmission and scanning electron microscopy. All the samples showed a very porous, open microstructure with fractal scaling properties. The building blocks of the fractal aggregates are nanocrystallites of lanthanide-doped Y2O3, with variations in the cubic lattice constant proportional to the composition of the solid solution and to the lanthanide ionic radius. The particles had a narrow distribution of sizes with an average value in the 20–50 nm range. They are made of a core of 10–20 nm, consisting of almost perfectly ordered crystals and a “fuzzy” layer, characterized by either a growing lattice disorder or by a compositional gradient. From this dimension, up to at least 200 nm, the particle aggregate is a mass fractal with a fractal dimension, DMf, in the 1.6–2.0 range.
