Nanostructuration is one of the most promising strategies to develop performant electrode materials for energy storage devices, such as hybrid supercapacitors. In this work, we studied the influence of precipitation medium and the use of a series of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ionic liquids for the nanostructuration of β(III) cobalt oxyhydroxides. Then, the effect of the nanostructuration and the impact of the different ionic liquids used during synthesis were investigated in terms of energy storage performances. First, we demonstrated that forward precipitation, in a cobalt-rich medium, leads to smaller particles with higher specific surface areas (SSA) and an enhanced mesoporosity. Introduction of ionic liquids (ILs) in the precipitation medium further strongly increased the specific surface area and the mesoporosity to achieve well-nanostructured materials with a very high SSA of 265 m2/g and porosity of 0.43 cm3/g. Additionally, we showed that ILs used as surfactant and template also functionalize the nanomaterial surface, leading to a beneficial synergy between the highly ionic conductive IL and the cobalt oxyhydroxide, which lowers the resistance charge transfer and improves the specific capacity. The nature of the ionic liquid had an important influence on the final electrochemical properties and the best performances were reached with the ionic liquid containing the longest alkyl chain.

We report on the impact of changes in the protic ionic liquid (pIL) cation on the fibrilisation kinetics and the conversion of the Aβ 16–22 from monomers to amyloid fibrils. When we compare the use of primary, secondary, and tertiary amines we find that the primary amine results in the greatest conversion into amyloid fibrils. We show that the pIL is directly interacting with the peptide and this likely drives the difference in conversion and kinetics observed.

This work highlights the factors tuning the thermal stability of imidazolium-based ionic liquids (IL) associated to bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anion [NTf2]. The decomposition temperatures (Td) were evaluated by thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) with optimized parameters to obtain reproducible Td. The impact of the alkyl chain length and of the presence of functional groups and unsaturations on Td were evaluated. The thermal behaviour was governed by Van der Waals interactions between alkyl chains, and by inter and intra coulombic interactions such as hydrogen bonds.

A systematic natural convection heat transfer experiment has been carried out of nanoparticle enhanced ionic liquids (NEILs) in rectangular enclosures (lengthxwidthxheight, 50×50×50mm and 50×50×75mm) heated from below condition. In the present experiment NEIL was made of N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl} imide, ([C4mpyrr][NTf2]) ionic liquid with 0.5% (weight%) Al2O3 nanoparticles. In addition to characterize the natural convection behavior of NEIL, thermophysical properties such as thermal conductivity, heat capacity, and viscosity were also measured. The result shows that the thermal conductivity of NEIL enhanced ∼3% from the base ionic liquid (IL), heat capacity enhanced ∼12% over the measured temperature range. The natural convection experimental result shows consistent for two different enclosures based on the degrading natural convection heat transfer rate over the measured Rayleigh number range. Possible reasons of the degradation of natural convection heat transfer may be the relative change of the thermophysical properties of NEIL compare to the base ionic liquid.

2-Oxazolines have been synthesized using a solventless ionic liquid melt in good yields at ambient temperatures. The efficiency of various Lewis acid catalysts for the same reaction has been compared. The effectiveness of different alkyl chains in the ionic liquids for the synthesis of oxazolines has been studied and a butylmethylimidazolinium chloride/indium chloride melt has been found to be the best media for promoting the reaction.

The pre-peak in the X-ray scattering patterns of ionic liquids is not always due to alkyl chains. In choline–proline (a bio-compatible ionic liquid), it is due to second-shell cation–cation distances.

Liquid-liquid solvent extraction has become the primary research topic for separating mixtures of rare-earths. [1] Current research on this topic focuses on extraction processes involving ionic liquids as basic extracting agents. In the aqueous phase, the rare-earth is coordinated by the anionic entities of the ionic liquid, forming an anionic complex. The large organic cation of the ionic liquid neutralizes the complex (ion-pair complex) and migrates the entity to an organic phase. The choice of these agents is solely based on the calculation of thermodynamical extraction parameters, whilst structural information about these compounds is rare or even non-existent. Our research focuses on obtaining structural information via crystallography on the above-mentioned molecules and relating the interactions between anion and cation to the stability of the complexes. A difference in stability between the anionic complex and cation can give a different extractability. Different rare-earth chloride salts were dissolved in an aqueous phase, containing ionic liquids with β-diketonate anions and 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium cations. After the extraction, crystals of the formed compounds are grown from the organic phase and measured. Current results show us that an intermolecular non-classical C-H ... O hydrogen bond is persistent across the different molecules, whilst small interactions between the cation side chain and halogens on the β-diketonate add extra stability to the crystal structure. Structures formed with 2-thenolytrifluoroactylacetonate anions have no intention to form side chain interactions, leaving the alkyl chain of the 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium in a void, whilst structures formed with hexafluoroacetylactonate have strong side chain interactions, which leads to a better packing. The different solubility of both compounds can be related to the different interactions and stability in the crystal structure.
