We present a new approach to acoustofluidic device design with a secondary channel separated from the main channel by a thin wall. This allows off-center placement of acoustic nodes, which enables high-efficiency and high-throughput separation of cell-scale objects.

The vortex separate flow that exists on the wall surfaces of blade, shroud, and hub is a major source of the performance loss for the modern axial fans/compressors. To-date the principal diagnostic and redesign approaches to reducing the vortex separate loss have been based on the principal parameters such as pressure, velocity, or Mach number. The original vortex separate flow may be decreased, but a new vortex separate flow which emanates from an else area may be produced, thus the whole course of designing a high performance axial compressor becomes more slowly. This paper presents a novel diagnostic approach based on Local Dynamics, which probes into physical sources of dynamic process and is quite different from principal methods, and a design scheme incorporating new restraint conditions, which depends less on the empirical formulas or models. As examples, one transonic fan rotor is diagnosed, and another low-speed compressor is diagnose and inverse-designed. The examples show that the new approach can enhance the load capability of the axial compressor and provide the high efficiency in a relatively wide working range.

AbstractHandling of submicron-sized objects is important in many biochemical and biomedical applications, but few methods today can precisely manipulate this range of particles. We present gradient acoustic focusing that enables flow-through particle separation of submicron particles and cells and we apply it for separation of bacteria from blood lysate to facilitate their detection in whole blood for improved diagnostics. To control suspended objects below the classical 2µm size limit for acoustic focusing, we introduce a co-flowing acoustic impedance gradient to generate a stabilizing acoustic volume force that supresses acoustic streaming. The method is validated theoretically and experimentally using polystyrene particles, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Escherichia coli. The applicability of the method is demonstrated by the separation of bacteria from selectively chemically lysed blood. Combined with downstream operations, this new approach opens up for novel methods for sepsis diagnostics.

Secondary channels present a favourable opportunity for ecological restoration of the River Rhine and its branches. However, they have to be fitted into the landscape without affecting existing interests such as inland shipping and protection against flooding. Also the ecological targets have to be met with a minimum of human interference. In this article some design principles for secondary channels are presented in which these aspects are taken into account. To avoid silting up of the secondary channel it is recommended to prevent sediment from entering the channel at all. Flow velocities have to be below the threshold value for initiation of motion of sediment, but still high enough to satisfy the ecological targets. The secondary channel discharge is a function of the maximum allowable aggradation of the main channel. Discharge and flow velocities together determine the required cross-sectional area and thus the design value of the bank slopes. In order to have flowing water in the secondary channel all year round, the thalweg level is to be chosen on the basis of the water level frequency curve of the main channel.

A new approach to theoretical evaluation of the Gibbs free energy of solvation was applied for estimation of retention data in high-performance liquid chromatography on reversed phases (RP-HPLC). Simple and improved models of stationary and mobile phases in RP-HPLC were employed. Statistically significant correlations between the calculated and experimental data were obtained for a heterogeneous series of twelve compounds.

In this work, an experiment was carried out to investigate the preparation condition of anisotropic, Fe-deficient, M-type Sr ferrite with optimum magnetic and physical properties by changing experimental parameters, such as the La substitution amount and little additive modification during fine milling process. The compositions of the calcined ferrites were chosen according to the stoichiometry LaxSr1-xFe12-2xO19, where M-type single-phase calcined powder was synthesized with a composition of x = 0.30. The effect of CaCO3, SiO2, and Co3O4 inter-additives on the Sr ferrite was also discussed in order to obtain low-temperature sintered magnets. The magnetic properties of Br = 4608 Gauss, bHc = 3650 Oe, iHc = 3765 Oe, and (BH)max = 5.23 MGOe were obtained for Sr ferrite hard magnets with low cobalt content at 1.7 wt%, which will eventually be used as high-end permanent magnets for the high-efficiency motor application in automobiles with Br > 4600 ± 50 G and iHc > 3600 ± 50 Oe.

Cities and nations worldwide are pledging to energy and carbon neutral objectives that imply a huge contribution from buildings. High-performance targets, either zero energy or zero carbon, are typically difficult to be reached by single buildings, but groups of properly-managed buildings might reach these ambitious goals. For this purpose we need tools and experiences to model, monitor, manage and optimize buildings and their neighborhood-level systems. The paper describes the activities pursued for the deployment of an advanced energy management system for a multi-carrier energy grid of an existing neighborhood in the area of Milan. The activities included: (i) development of a detailed monitoring plan, (ii) deployment of the monitoring plan, (iii) development of a virtual model of the neighborhood and simulation of the energy performance. Comparisons against early-stage energy monitoring data proved promising and the generation system showed high efficiency (EER equal to 5.84), to be further exploited.
