The cubic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS), which has a well-defined compact frame, high symmetry, and various modified organic substitutes, has received much interest as one of the most critical building blocks for hybrid nanomaterials and self-assembly driven amphiphilics. This work assessed current molecular design advances, solution self-assembly capabilities, and anticipated biological applications of POSS-based hybrid materials. By adopting controlled/living polymerization techniques and considerable advancements in efficient chemical coupling techniques, preparation techniques for topological POSS-based hybrid materials have become a rapidly increasing research field with future advances. The resultant POSS hybrids with various functional groups help to create complicated, unique self-assembled morphologies in solutions, induced by discrete intermolecular interactions. POSS-based hybrid materials have a wide variety of applications, including drug administration, gene therapy, biological imaging, and bone regeneration, due to their particular benefits (such as high biocompatibility, low cytototoxicity, and good degradability) and simplicity of self-assembly behaviour.

Polymer nanocomposites based on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) and their solutions and suspensions are promising systems for fundamental research which could potentially utilize self-assembly approach in designing new nanocomposite materials. Numerous applications could benefit from understanding of these systems, for instance polymer solution based paints and varnishes. This work is an initial stage of a study which aim is to link macroscale thermomechanical properties with nanoscale structures found in polymer nanocomposites. To do so, a suitable experimental protocol for preparing differently organized NPs in polymer matrix has to be find first in which both kinetic and thermodynamical parameters should be taken into account, i.e. solution casting has being investigated. The results presented here found differences between nanoparticle induced changes on rheological behavior of polystyrene solution under large amplitude oscillation shear (LAOS). High-affinity OP-POSS NPs seem to interact with PS at low loadings and form stiffened aggregates, whereas low-affinity OM-POSS NPs remained rather uninvolved. Effect of hydrodynamic forces independent of the NPs chemical nature was also observed.

This study reports a novel series of imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) based on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) towards effective detection of metal ions, especially Fe3+ ion. 1H, 13C, 29Si NMR, high resolution mass spectra (HRMS) and Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) were applied to confirm the structures of the ILs based on POSS (ILs-POSS). The three ILs-POSS were synthesized via a green chemistry approach—a thiol-ene “click” reaction without metal ions as catalysts. Furthermore, the spherical vesicle structures of the ILs-POSS were observed and caused by self-assembly behaviors. Through comprehensive characterizations, these ILs-POSS have performed excellent thermal stabilities and low glass transition temperatures. In addition, we found it very meaningful that the limits of detection (LODs) of the three ILs-POSS for the detection of the Fe3+ ion were 7.91 × 10−8 M, 1.2 × 10−7 M, and 1.2 × 10−7 M, respectively. These data illustrate that these ILs-POSS have great potential for the detection of the Fe3+ ion. In conclusion, this study not only prepared novel ILs-POSS, but also provided new materials as fluorescent sensors in the detection of Fe3+.

Understanding the mechanism of molecular self-assembly to form well-organized nanostructures is essential in the field of supramolecular chemistry. Particularly, amphiphilic copolymers incorporated with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSSs) have been one of the most promising materials in material science, engineering, and biomedical fields. In this review, new ideas and research works which have been carried out over the last several years in this relatively new area with a main focus on their mechanism in self-assembly and applications are discussed. In addition, insights into the unique role of POSSs in synthesis, microphase separation, and confined size were encompassed. Finally, perspectives and challenges related to the further advancement of POSS-based amphiphilics are discussed, followed by the proposed design considerations to address the challenges that we may face in the future.
