Abstract Benzoic acid, propyl p-hydroxybenzoate, and sorbic acid in milk have been determined by using the corresponding first derivative curves of absorption spectra of clarified milk samples. The ΔA/Δλ curves were computed and the concentration of each preservative was calculated using 1 point, 2 points, and/or 3 points. In all cases, the percentage error was within 2.4%.

The simple, rapid spectrophotometric method for palladium(II) ions determination using a new analytical reagent is described. The interaction of Pd(II) ions with a reagent, of the class of azolidones, 4-(N′-(4-imino-2-oxo-thiazolidine-5-ylidene)-hydrazino)-benzoic acid, in water medium results in the formation of a complex. The Pd(II)-p-ITYBA complex shows maximum absorbance at a wavelength of 450 nm. The molar absorptivity is 4.30 × 103 L·mol−1·cm−1. The optimal pH for complex formation is 7.0. The developed method has a wide linearity range of 0.64–10.64 µg·mL−1 for Pd(II). The detection limit is 0.23 µg·mL−1. It was found that Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Fe(III), Cu(II), Al(III), and many anions do not interfere with the Pd(II) determination. The proposed method was tested in the analysis of model solutions and successfully applied for the determination of palladium in catalyst. The obtained results show that this method can be used for serial determinations of palladium in various objects.

On the basis of affinity of Fe(III) ions toward functional groups of 2,6-dihydroxy benzoic acid (2,6-DHB), a charge transfer complex (CT) is formed between Fe(III) ion and 2,6-DHB in acidic media. The stoichiometry and stability constant of the complex was determined using both mole ratio and Job’s methods. The stability constant of 1:1 complex formed in acidic media is 2.55±0.14×105(mole ratio) or 2.70±0.12×105(Job), in which the quantities are in agreement with together. This method was used for spectrophotometric determination of Fe(III) in aqueous media. The dynamic range and detection limit (DL) were 1.2×10-5to 3.6×10-4M and 1.5×10-6M, respectively. The relative standard deviation (RSD) was found to be 0.76% in the replicate treatments (n=7) with 1.6×10-4M Fe(III). The practical applicability of the method was confirmed using a synthetic certificated reference material (CRM) and spiked natural water samples.
