We constructed highly oriented and ordered macropores within metal-organic framework (MOF) single crystals, opening up the area of three-dimensional–ordered macro-microporous materials (that is, materials containing both macro- and micropores) in single-crystalline form. Our methodology relies on the strong shaping effects of a polystyrene nanosphere monolith template and a double-solvent–induced heterogeneous nucleation approach. This process synergistically enabled the in situ growth of MOFs within ordered voids, rendering a single crystal with oriented and ordered macro-microporous structure. The improved mass diffusion properties of such hierarchical frameworks, together with their robust single-crystalline nature, endow them with superior catalytic activity and recyclability for bulky-molecule reactions, as compared with conventional, polycrystalline hollow, and disordered macroporous ZIF-8.

AbstractTlBr single crystals grown using the vertical Bridgman-Stockbarger method were characterized for semiconductor based radiation detector applications. It has been shown that the vertical Bridgman-Stockbarger method is effective to grow high-quality single crystalline ingots of TlBr. The TlBr single crystalline sample, which was located 6 cm from the tip of the ingot, exhibited lower impurity concentration, higher crystalline quality, high enough bandgap (>2.7 eV), and higher resistivity (2.5 × 1011 Ω·cm) which enables using the fabricated samples from the middle part of the TlBr ingot for fabricating high performance semiconductor radiation detectors.

AbstractHigh temperature compression tests were performed on Cr 3Si single crystalline and poly crystalline samples. Slip systems were determined to be of the {001}<010> type based on an analysis of slip traces and Laue spots. Single crystals show significant compressive ductility at temperatures above 0.7Tm. The implication of cube slip on the ductility of A15-type intermetallic compounds is discussed.

Organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite single crystals have attracted much attention due to their superior optoelectronic properties. Herein, we report a facile vapor-solution sequential route to prepare single-crystalline nanosheets of hybrid lead triiodide perovskite. It is found that this two-step deposition is able to fabricate sizeable high-quality single-crystalline nanosheets with no need of delicate control of crystallization conditions such as concentration or temperature for normal single crystal growth. The resulting perovskite nanosheets show good reproducibility and single crystallinity with bright and uniform photoluminescence. Our study provides a promising strategy for scalable fabrication of perovskite single crystals with great potential in optoelectronic applications.

Poly- and single-crystalline BaTi2O5 co-substituted with SrO and ZrO2, Ba0.99Sr0.01(Ti1-xZrx)2O5 (BT2SZ) were prepared by arc-melting and floating-zone (FZ) melting, respectively. The specimens showed a significant (020) orientation. The highest permittivity of poly-crystalline BT2SZ was 3880 at x = 0.005 and that of single-crystal was 27000 at x = 0.005. The Curie temperature (Tc) of poly-crystals decreased from 750 to 640 K with increasing x from 0 to 0.026 and that of single-crystals decreased from 750 to 710 K with increasing x from 0 to 0.008. The highest remnant polarization of single crystalline BT2SZ was 7.8×10-2 Cm-2 at x = 0.008, higher than that of the poly-crystal.
