Identifying key determinants of success plays an important role in efforts of assessing the current state of educational practices and implementing effective actions to improve academic performance. Given how important is accurate identification of these determinants for valid comparisons, the aim of this research was to present extensive comparative results on 8th grade students' science success for 39 countries. To this end, a total number of 229,493 students' information obtained from the last cycle of Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study was handled. Unlike previous studies in which success has been tried to be explained with some factors, this research extended the literature by investigating the effective factors as well as gender-related variability on science success with a holistic view. Using heterogeneous choice models, unobserved heterogeneity caused by gender difference was tested and controlled. The findings showed that gender variability was evident for 10 countries. Furthermore, factors associated with students' future educational goals, home educational resources and confidence were found as the common determinators of science success in all participant countries. Another notable finding was all factors, except time spent on doing homework, tended to differentiate the success status between girls and boys of 22 countries. For a sample of 305 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students, of whom 95% was from economically disadvantaged Hispanic families and for whom English was their second language, evidence was sought regarding the reliability and construct validity of scores on a Spanish version of an academic self-concept measure entitled Dimensions of Self-Concept (DOSC), comprising five subscales bearing the same names as those of the five hypothesized constructs that they were intended to operationalize: Level of Aspiration, Anxiety, Academic Interest and Satisfaction, Leadership and Initiative, and Identification versus Alienation. Reliability estimates varying between .72 and .80 were judged to be reasonably satisfactory. Results from oblique factor analysis lent empirical support for the hypothesized constructs of Anxiety, Leadership and Initiative, and Identification versus Alienation. Scores associated with the subscales of Level of Aspiration and Academic Interest and Satisfaction generated a factor interpreted as a fusion of the two constructs of Level of Aspiration and Academic Interest and Satisfaction.

The purpose of this research is to find the correlation between mathematical generalization skill and student’s self-concept in learning activities by using learning strategy based on VBA’s Microsoft Excel. Experimental method is used in the research with 2 different classes. The first class is given by VBA Microsoft Excel learning based, while the other class is given common learning method. In addition, the data sample used in this research are all Junior High School in Cimahi, one school is selected randomly and SMP Negeri 4 Cimahi has been selected. The Sample chosen is the 8th grade pupils which selected randomly. One class as experiment class, and the other is controlled class. The result of the research is obtained from mathematical generalization skill test instrument of phytagoras and self-concept skill inquiry as non-test instrument. Mathematical generalization skill post-test result and final inquiry are analyzed by using Spearman to find the correlation. The result shows that there is a correlation between mathematical generalization skill and student’s self-concept in learning mathematics.

This paper is a presentation of the results of the research of the relation between the physical self-concept and physical exercise of primary school pupils. The starting point is a multidimensional model of physical self-concept by Marsh and his associates. The aim of the research was to study the characteristics of physical self-concept of primary school pupils with regard to the degree of involvement in physical exercise and sports. It was also examined whether there are gender differences in the characteristics of the physical self-concept of pupils, as well as relations between physical self-concept and physical exercise within gender groups, with regard to the degree of involvement in physical exercise and sports. The research was conducted on the sample of 469 primary school pupils (225 boys and 244 girls), from the 6th to 8th grade, of average age of 13,6. The Physical Self- Description Questionnaire (PSDQ) of Marsh and associates was applied. The results indicate the existence of statistically significant differences in the characteristics of the physical self-concept in favour of the group of pupils who, besides physical education classes, are additionally involved in physical exercise and sports. Some differences were expressed in certain characteristics of physical self-concept between boys and girls, and the results also indicate larger differences in the characteristics of the physical self-concept in the sample of girls than boys, when the degree of their involvement in physical exercise and sports is observed.

<p class="Normal1">Penelitian dilakukan untuk mengetahui efektifitas konseling kelompok ringkas berfokus solusi guna mengembangkan konsep diri akademik siswa kelas VIII SMP Negeri 3 Tanjungsari tahun ajaran 2018/2019. Menggunakan jenis penelitian Eksperimen, dengan desain pre-eksperimen, model yang digunakan adalah <em>One-group pretest posttest design</em>. Subjek dipilih dengan teknik <em>Nonprobability Sampling Design</em> menggunakan <em>Purposive Sampling</em>. Pemilihan subjek didapatkan 6 siswa dari kelas VIII SMP Negeri 3 Tanjungsari, yang kategori dari nilai skala konsep diri akademiknya rendah. Teknik pengumpulan daya yang digunakan adalah skala konsep diri akademik dan pedoman wawancara. Data terkumpul dalam bentuk kuantitatif (angka). Analisis secara statistik dilakukan menggunakan rumus t-test. Hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa ada perbedaan signifikan antara tingkat konsep diri akademik siswa sebelum dan setelah diberikan perlakuan yaitu layanan konseling kelompok ringkas berfokus solusi.</p><p class="Normal1"> </p><strong><em>Abstract</em></strong><em></em><span class="longtext"><span lang="IN"><em>: This study aims to determine the effectiveness of solutions focused group brief counseling to develop academic self-concept of class VIII students of Tanjungsari State Junior High School 3 academic year 2018/2019. The type of research used was Experiments with the Pre-Experimental Design using the One-group pretest posttest design. Determination of the subject uses the Nonprobability Sampling Design technique using Purposive Sampling. The subjects of this study were 6 students from 8th grade of Tanjungsari State Junior High School 3, with a category of low academic self-concept scale values. The power collection techniques used are the scale of academic self-concept and interview guidelines. Data collected in quantitative form (numbers) are then analyzed statistically using the t-test formula. The results showed a significant difference between the level of academic self-concept of students before and after being given a solution-focused group counseling treatment</em><em>.</em><br /></span></span>
