ABSTRACT Retirement is the act of retiring or the state of being retired, i.e. to withdraw oneself from business, public life or and to remove from active service. However, it is important to recognize that retirement as a single life event is rarely the cause of these outcomes. Perhaps people with greater work ethic might be more prepared for retirement and might feel it to be their “just reward” for their years of hard work. Also found that retirees who had higher entrepreneurial orientations were more likely to engage in career bridge employment than in full retirement, whereas retirees who had more desire to pursue a new career were more likely to engage in bridge employment in a different field than in full retirement. A significantly negative relationship was found between loneliness, depression, hopelessness and income. Conclusion shows that institutionalization might lead to poor mental health. Key Words: Psychological problems in old age, Urban and rural area.

Many elderly people develop a multiplicity of physical and psychological problems in association with advancing age. It has become possible for the health professions to do a great deal to limit the extent of disability and improve the symptomatology, thus improving quality of life. Massive advances have taken place in the field of pharmacology and therapeutics. Many of the medicines utilised have untoward side-effects in the elderly; side-effects which are frequently not recognised timeously. A few of the side-effects are discussed in some detail and pleas are made for the judicious application of therapeutic schedules to problems in the elderly, recognising the dangers inherent in multiple prescribing.

India is gradually turning into graying nation. With increased life expectancy there is more number of citizens above 60-65 age range now. However the changes that come in later life – retirement, death of spouse, increased isolation – can lead to different psychological problems among which depression is quite common. At the same time, studies indicate that loneliness, self esteem are potent factors involved in such psychological problems. The present study was undertaken to find the relation of such factors on depression in elderly Kashmiris as well as their presence in different sections. The sample consisted of 100 old age retired persons taken from different districts of Kashmir. Geriatric Depression Scale, Rosenberg’s Self –Esteem Scale, and UCLA loneliness Scale were applied on the participants to collect the data. Spss 20 was used to analyse the data and results revealed significant positive as well as negative correlation among different variables. However no significant differences were found across gender and domicile of participants on any of the measure. Hence it is clear that there is relation of depression with lonliness and self-esteem, however the nature and the direction of effect is not fully established.

Previous studies revealed that students’ willingness to provide dental services for older patients is mainly influenced by their individual perception of elders rather than their knowledge about old age. The aim of this study was to estimate students’ perception of old and young age as well as their hopes and fears associated with old age and to compare two cohorts that participated in the study 10 years apart. Data were obtained from a questionnaire completed by two cohorts of undergraduate dental students from 2006 to 2008 (T1, n = 207) and 2016 to 2018 (T2, n = 135). Participants were asked to define the ages that they consider a man or woman to be old and young. Moreover, they had to specify their fears and hopes associated with old age. Reported thresholds for old age differed significantly between T1 and T2. In contrast to T1 students, T2 students defined a person to be old at a higher age and barely differentiated between the old ages of men and women. Furthermore, T2 students presented more fears related to aging than T1 students, e.g., psychological problems or loss of independence. The perception of age appears to be a multifactorial process and significantly changed between students of T1 and T2. Fears of dental students regarding old age should be addressed in, e.g., gerodontological curricula, to foster positive experiences in interaction with older people and highlight the important and rewarding aspects of gerodontology.
