Me and you in a mobile world: The development of regional identity and personal relationships in young adulthood.

Male and female college students ( N = 106) in the developmental stage of transition to young adulthood (mean age = 19.9 yr.) were asked to imagine themselves at midlife in three life settings: work, personal relationships/family, and leisure. For each setting they described themselves on the instrumental and expressive scales of the Personal Attributes Questionnaire and on scales of agentic and communal competencies. Subjects anticipated more instrumental traits, more agentic competency, and less communal competency in work settings than in personal relationships, with no differences between men and women. Gender and setting interacted for expressiveness: women anticipated more expressive traits than men in personal relationships, with no difference in the other settings. The anticipated traits and competencies of these subjects were related more to setting than to gender. This may reflect a shift in the definition of sex-role boundaries in American culture.

The external orbital gland of the albino rat exhibits both sexual dimorphism and histological age changes. In males, many cells attain a remarkable degree of polyploidy and an increase of polyploid cell number constitutes the major age change until young adulthood. The acini of young adults have a small lumen and are composed of tall serous cells. Subsequently, many acini acquire a larger lumen with an irregular outline while numerous vacuoles accumulate throughout the secretory cells. At the same time, vesicular acini with a large lumen surrounded by pale-staining low cuboidal diploid cells begin to appear and their number increases throughout old age. The fine structure of external orbital glands from both sexes has been explored and in considering acinar cells from males, emphasis was given to the form of the Golgi membranes and to nuclear infoldings of cytoplasmic constituents.

Zusammenfassung. Die Erfassung von Beschwerden und der Befindlichkeit sind wesentlicher Teil eines klinisch-diagnostischen Prozesses. Da Angststörungen und Depressionen in hohem Maße mit verschiedenen psychischen und körperlichen Belastung einhergehen, wurden in dieser Studie primär die prädiktiven Eigenschaften der Beschwerden-Liste (B-LR) und der Befindlichkeits-Skala (Bf-SR) in revidierter Form mittels Regressionsanalysen (linear und hierarchisch) an einer Stichprobe von N = 2504 untersucht. Als abhängiges Kriterium galt die Ausprägung von Angst- und Depressionssymptomen, ermittelt über das Kurzscreening Patient-Health-Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4). Da vermutet wurde, dass entsprechende Symptome auch einen Einfluss auf die Qualität sozialer Beziehungen des Betroffenen haben und die globale Lebenszufriedenheit beeinflussen, wurden zudem das Quality of Personal Relationships Inventory (QRI) sowie der Fragebogen zur Lebenszufriedenheit (FLZM) eingesetzt. Sowohl B-LR als auch Bf-SR verfügten über alle Altersgruppen und geschlechtsinvariant über hohe prädiktive Eigenschaften. Die Qualität sozialer Beziehung (QRI) eignet sich nicht zur Vorhersage von Angst und Depressionen. Globale Lebenszufriedenheit nimmt in der Altersgruppe 14–74 gegenläufig zum Anstieg von Angst- und Depressionssymptomen signifikant ab, in der Altersgruppe der ⩾ 75-jährigen Männern leistet diese jedoch keinen signifikanten Beitrag zur Varianzaufklärung. Bei den Frauen dieser Altersgruppe geht eine Erhöhung der Lebenszufriedenheit mit der Zunahme von Angst- und Depressionssymptomen einher. Die Ergebnisse lassen den Schluss zu, dass der Einsatz von B-LR und Bf-SR eine gute Informations- und Handlungsbasis für Forschung und klinische Praxis darstellen. Die unterschiedlichen Tendenzen innerhalb der Analysen zwischen Männern und Frauen weisen auf geschlechtsspezifische Verarbeitungsmechanismen hin. In höherem Alter sollte die Ausprägung von Beschwerden Indikator für die Ermittlung weiterer Ressourcen darstellen, um einen positiven Einfluss auf die Lebenszufriedenheit auszuüben.

Abstract. Does personality stay stable after young adulthood or is there continued change throughout middle and later adulthood? For decades, this question has caused heated debate. Over the last couple of years, a consensus has emerged based on recent cross-cultural as well as longitudinal evidence. This consensus confirms that indeed there is personality change in middle and later adulthood. Many authors have labeled this change personality maturation or growth. In somewhat simplified terms the observed pattern is as follows: neuroticism declines, conscientiousness and agreeableness increase. At the same time it has been argued that this pattern of personality change is the result of coping with the developmental tasks of adulthood and, thus, increased adjustment. We would like to examine this practice of equating developmental adjustment with growth and ask how to define personality growth. To answer this question, we consult theories of personality development as well as lifespan theory.
