The cranial base is a multifunctional bony platform within the core of the cranium, spanning rostral to caudal ends. This structure provides support for the brain and skull vault above, serves as a link between the head and the vertebral column below, and seamlessly integrates with the facial skeleton at its rostral end. Unique from the majority of the cranial skeleton, the cranial base develops from a cartilage intermediate—the chondrocranium—through the process of endochondral ossification. Owing to the intimate association of the cranial base with nearly all aspects of the head, congenital birth defects impacting these structures often coincide with anomalies of the cranial base. Despite this critical importance, studies investigating the genetic control of cranial base development and associated disorders lags in comparison to other craniofacial structures. Here, we highlight and review developmental and genetic aspects of the cranial base, including its transition from cartilage to bone, dual embryological origins, and vignettes of transcription factors controlling its formation.

While research on third language (L3) and multilingualism has recently shown remarkable growth, the fundamental question of what makes trilingualism special compared to bilingualism, and indeed monolingualism, continues to be evaded. In this contribution we consider whether there is such a thing as a true monolingual, and if there is a difference between dialects, styles, registers and languages. While linguistic and psycholinguistic studies suggest differences in the processing of a third, compared to the first or second language, neurolinguistic research has shown that generally the same areas of the brain are activated during language use in proficient multilinguals. It is concluded that while from traditional linguistic and psycholinguistic perspectives there are grounds to differentiate monolingual, bilingual and multilingual processing, a more dynamic perspective on language processing in which development over time is the core issue, leads to a questioning of the notion of languages as separate entities in the brain.

It is now well known that brain evolution, development, and structure do not respect Western folk categories of mind – that is, the boundaries of those folk categories have never been identified in nature, despite decades of search. Categories for cognitions, emotions, perceptions, and so on, may be useful for describing the mental phenomena that constitute a human mind, but they make a poor starting point for understanding the interplay of mechanisms that create those mental events in the first place. In this paper, we integrate evolutionary, developmental, anatomical, and functional evidence and propose that predictive regulation of the body’s internal systems (allostasis) and modeling the sensory consequences of this regulation (interoception) may be basic functions of the brain that are embedded in coordinated structural and functional gradients. Our approach offers the basis for a coherent, neurobiologically-inspired research program that attempts to explain how a variety of psychological and physical phenomena may emerge from the same biological mechanisms, thus providing an opportunity to unify them under a common explanatory framework that can be used to develop shared vocabulary for theory building and knowledge accumulation.

In this Chapter we first look at the core view of the biology of language associated with Minimalism, including the Biolinguistics Program (section 2). Next, we consider research on the brain (section 3) and genetics (section 4), associated with this framework. Finally, we introduce some subsequent views of language evolution which break away from the saltationist, discontinuous nature of the mainstream approach (section 5), and draw some conclusions regarding future prospects (section 6).

This chapter focuses on the tension between domination systems and partnership systems as two ends of a continuum along which human societies can be organized, regardless of whether they are Eastern or Western, Northern or Southern, religious or secular, rightist or leftist, and so on. It describes the core components of each system, how these interact, and how growing up in societies that orient to one or the other differently affects neurological development and hence our perceptions, cognitions, emotions, and behaviors—which in turn affect human health, happiness, well-being, and the types of societies we create. The chapter provides examples of how domination systems produce high levels of stress—from the artificial creation of economic scarcity to stressful early family experiences—and how this plays out in the neurochemistry of the brain, tending to keep people at a less advanced level of overall human development that interferes with the full flourishing of those very qualities that make people happiest: security, empathy, consciousness, creativity, and love. On the other hand, partnership environments—as illustrated by descriptions of conditions in Nordic nations—enhance the expression of human capacities for health, happiness, well-being, consciousness, and creativity.

‘Into the 21st century’ explains how there is an increased focus on how our body, and not just the brain, influences our mental health. Rapidly advancing computer technology, including artificial intelligence and virtual reality, is beginning to provide new treatment possibilities, not just support and simplify the old ones. The development of sophisticated imaging has supercharged the area of neurosciences and the increased understanding of genetics and the new science of epigenetics provide psychiatry with greater tools to identify and manage mental illnesses. A paradox with our increasingly technological and scientific advances is that the core dilemmas of psychiatry appear not to be diminishing. Psychiatry will survive the 21st century, but certainly it is changing.

Abstract Schizophrenia is a debilitating psychiatric disorder with a significant number of patients not adequately responding to treatment. Phencyclidine (PCP) is used as a validated model for schizophrenia, shown to reliably induce positive, negative and cognitive-like behaviors in rodents. It was previously shown in our lab that behavioral phenotypes of PCP-treated mice can be alleviated after intracranial transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). Here, we assessed the feasibility of intranasal delivery of MSCs-derived-extracellular vesicles (EVs) to alleviate schizophrenia-like behaviors in a PCP model of schizophrenia. As MSCs-derived EVs were already shown to concentrate at the site of lesion in the brain, we determined that in PCP induced injury the EVs migrate to the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of treated mice, a most involved area of the brain in schizophrenia. We show that intranasal delivery of MSC-EVs improve social interaction and disruption in prepulse inhibition (PPI) seen in PCP-treated mice. In addition, immunohistochemical studies demonstrate that the EVs preserve the number of parvalbumin-positive GABAergic interneurons in the PFC of treated mice. Finally, MSCs-EVs reduced glutamate levels in the CSF of PCP-treated mice, which might explain the reduction of toxicity. In conclusion, we show that MSCs-EVs improve the core schizophrenia-like behavior and biochemical markers of schizophrenia and might be used as a novel treatment for this incurable disorder.

The chromosomal region, 19p 13.2, has been suggested to be linked with schizoaffective disorder (Hamshere et al. 2005). This region harbors the calreticulin gene, protein encoded by which is an endoplasmic Ca+2-binding molecular chaperone. Development-dependent, tissue-specific expression of this gene in the gray matter coincides with the expression of psychoses phenotypes. We have recently reported instances of mutations within the core promoter (−48 G>C, −205 C>T) and coding sequence [exon 5 (c: 682 C>T, pro228ser)] of the gene in schizoaffective disorder. In view of the mounting evidence on the genetic overlap in the psychiatric spectrum, we investigated this gene in 386 patients afflicted with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, major affective disorder and 600 controls by PCR/SSCA. We found that a unique mutation within the core promoter of the gene, located at a conserved genomic block, co-occurring with four cases of psychoses including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder and bipolar disorder type I. This unique mutation reverts the human promoter sequence to the ancestral types observed in chimpanzee, rhesus Macaque and mouse, implying that the genomic block harboring this nucleotide may be involved in the evolution of human-specific higher-order functions of the brain (i.e. cognition), that are ubiquitously impaired in psychoses. Our findings propose that calreticulin is not only a promising candidate in the spectrum of psychoses, but also, a gene that may be important in the process of human-unique higher-level functions of the brain.

Coupling method is developed in recent years to solve numerical problems a new method, meshless - the finite element of a direct coupling method is based on the definition of the generalized unit of coupling of the new method . The core of this method is the use of each unit in the shape function to the assumption that the brain that the whole sub-domain to be seeking to solve the unknown field function. Coupling with other compared with the method is simple to calculate the advantages of a short time.

Apneusis, or apneustic respirations, is characterized by an abnormal breathing pattern involving gasping and the inability to fully expire. A loss of gag reflex and other cranial nerve deficits are also often accompanied with these respiratory changes. In neurological intensive care units (NICUs), these respiratory and airway changes are not uncommon and have been well documented (Lee et al. 1976). These clinical changes are often associated with pontine trauma as it is the core pneumotaxic center in the brain stem. We describe the airway management of a patient with an acute, occult pontine infarct status post craniectomy and cervical laminectomy for decompression of known Chiari malformation in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU).
