AbstractThe aim of the study was to define the prevalence and degree of advanced bone age (ABA) in normal vs. excessive weight children, and identify variables affecting ABA.We studied 167 children (3–18 years) with normal weight (28 F, 28 M), overweight (8 F, 12 M), and obesity (OB) (63 F, 28 M) at AI duPont Hospital for Children. We assessed bone age (BA), insulin, leptin, estradiol (E2), DHEAS, and IGF-1 levels.Almost 25% of OB children have ABA>2 SDS, 33% >2 years (range 2–6.5 years advanced). ABA correlated with leptin, DHEAS and BMI z-score in girls, and with IGF-1 z-score and BMI z-score in boys (p<0.01). Girls with ABA had higher BMI z-score (p<0.001), insulin levels (p=0.02), and rates of weight gain (p=0.03). Boys with ABA had greater BMI z-score (p<0.001), but rate of weight gain did not differ. The greatest degree of ABA was found combining variables by tertiles. The top tertile of BA/CA had the highest insulin and IGF-1 z-scores. The top combined tertiles of DHEAS and BMI z-score or DHEAS and leptin in girls had the highest BA/CA. In boys, the top tertiles of BMI z-score and IGF-1 z-score produced the highest BA/CA. The lowest combined tertiles of any variables related to the lowest BA/CA.Multiple factors influence skeletal maturation. Almost 25% of children with OB have ABA, associated with BMI z-score, and one or more of the following: insulin, leptin, DHEAS, IGF-1, and rate of weight gain. This report delineates the prevalence and degree of ABA by sex, in children with normal versus excessive weight.

Abstract Multiple factors determine the likelihood, type, and severity of bodily injury following a motor vehicle collision and, in turn, influence the need for treatment, extent of disability, and likelihood of permanent impairment. Among the most important factors is the change in velocity due to an impact (Δv). Other factors include the individual's strength and elasticity, body position at the time of impact, awareness of the impending impact (ie, opportunity to brace, guard, or contract muscles before an impact), and effects of braking. Because Δv is the area under the acceleration vs time curve, it combines force and duration and is a useful way to quantify impact severity. The article includes a table showing the results of a literature review that concluded, “the consensus of human subject research conducted to date is that a single exposure to a rear-end impact with a Δv of 5 mph or less is unlikely to result in injury” in most healthy, restrained occupants. Because velocity incorporates direction as well as speed, a vehicular occupant is less likely to be injured in a rear impact than when struck from the side. Evaluators must consider multiple factors, including the occupant's pre-existing physical and psychosocial status, the mechanism and magnitude of the collision, and a variety of biomechanical variables. Recommendations based solely on patient history and physical findings (and, perhaps, imaging studies) may be ill-informed.

This paper explores some key texts of Virginia Woolf in the context of Deleuzian concepts. Using a close reading style, it shows how the prose poetry in Mrs Dalloway engages a complex interplay of repetition and difference, resulting in a remarkably similar model of the three syntheses of time as Deleuze understands them. It subsequently explores Woolf's technical processes in a key passage from To the Lighthouse, showing how the prose-poetic technique systematically undoes the structures of logical fact and rationality inscribed in both language and everyday speech to an extremely precise level.

Russian societal nationalism comes in various guises, both ethnic and imperialist. Also Putin’s rhetoric is marked by the tensions between ethnic and state-focused, imperialist thinking. Noting the complex interplay of state nationalism and societal nationalism, this introductory chapter examines the mental framework within which Russian politicians were acting prior to the decision to annex Crimea. The chapter develops a typology of Russian nationalisms, surveys recent developments, and presents the three-part structure of this book: official nationalism, radical and other societal nationalisms, and identities/otherings. It concludes that after the annexation of Crimea, when the state took over the agenda of both ethnic and imperialist nationalists in Russia, societal nationalism finds itself at low ebb.

Background: Our study aimed to investigate the incidence of depression in 387 patients with asthma. Methods: The Zung self-rating depression scale and the Hamilton depression scale were used to evaluate the depression status in patients with asthma. Results: Results of logistic regression analysis indicated that, severity of asthma symptoms, taking medicine, frequency of asthma onset, and lack of education were the major risk factors for depression in patients with asthma. Conclusion: Depression is a complication with high morbidity in patients with asthma. It largely affects disease control of asthma and the quality life in patients. Multiple factors are relevant for depression in the patient with asthma. This study provided a comprehensive horizon for clinical management and treatment of depression in patients with asthma.

This work aims to address two major roadblocks in the development of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries: the inefficient deposition of Li on the metallic Li electrode and the parasitic "polysulfide redox shuttle". These roadblocks are here approached, respectively, by the combination of a cellulose separator with a cathode-facing conductive porous carbon interlayer, based on their previously reported individual benefits. The cellulose separator increases cycle life by 33%, and the interlayer by a further 25%, in test cells with positive electrodes with practically relevant specifications and a relatively low electrolyte/sulfur (E/S) ratio. Despite the prolonged cycle life, the combination of the interlayer and cellulose separator increases the polysulfide shuttle current, leading to reduced Coulombic efficiency. Based on XPS analyses, the latter is ascribed to a change in the composition of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on Li. Meanwhile, electrolyte decomposition is found to be slower in cells with cellulose-based separators, which explains their longer cycle life. These counterintuitive observations demonstrate the complicated interactions between the cell components in the Li-S system and how strategies aiming to mitigate one unwanted process may exacerbate another. This study demonstrates the value of a holistic approach to the development of Li-S chemistry.<br>
