Strategic Position

The school occupies a strategic position in our culture as the only organized institution that reaches every member of society during formative years. Thus it is vital not only as a transmitter of culture and a molder of society's future but also as a channel of contact through which pathology in individuals can be discovered and corrected if possible. This is one of the rationales of organized school health services. Adverse conditions that can be loosely grouped as "emotional" rank next in prevalence to adverse dental and eye conditions in school children and are of far greater significance. This has led to attempts to devise a screening instrument for use in schools that will identify emotionally handicapped children with as few false-positive and false-negative reports as possible.
