The WAVEWATCH III model is a third generation wave model and is commonly used for wave forecasting over different oceans. In this study, the performance of WAVEWATCH III to simulate Ocean wave characteristics (wavelengths, and wave heights (amplitudes)) over the western Indian Ocean in the Coast of East African countries was validated against satellite observation data. Simulated significant wave heights (SWH) and wavelengths over the South West Indian Ocean domain during the month of June 2014 was compared with satellite observation. Statistical measures of model performance that includes bias, Mean Error (ME), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Standard Deviation of error (SDE) and Correlation Coefficient (r) are used. It is found that in June 2014, when the WAVEWATCH III model was forced by wind data from the Global Forecasting System (GFS), simulated the wave heights over the Coast of East African countries with biases, Mean Error (ME), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Correlation Coefficient (r) and Standard Deviation of error (SDE) in the range of -0.25 to -0.39 m, 0.71 to 3.38 m, 0.84 to 1.84 m, 0.55 to 0.76 and 0.38 to 0.44 respectively. While, when the model was forced by wind data from the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Foresting (ECMWF) simulated wave height with biases, Mean Error (ME), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Correlation Coefficient (r) and Standard Deviation of error (SDE) in the range of -0.034 to 0.008 m, 0.0006 to 0.049 m, 0.026 to 0.22 m, 0.76 to 0.89 and 0.31 to 0.41 respectively. This implies that the WAVEWATCH III model performs better in simulating wave characteristics over the South West of Indian Ocean when forced by the boundary condition from ECMWF than from GFS.

Indonesia merupakan Negara kepulauan yang sebagian besar wilayahnya adalah perairan, maka segala aktivitas di laut menjadi bagian penting bagi kehidupan masyarakat Indonesia.Masih terbatasnya akses dalam memperoleh data dan informasi berkaitan dengan panjang dan tinggi gelombang di Perairan Laut Indonesia, menjadi salah satu penyebab yang dapat mempengaruhi operasi/pelayaran KRI dalam setiap melaksanakan tugas operasi di laut.Penelitian panjang dan tinggi gelombang bertujuan untuk mendukung operasi KRI. Informasi tentang panjang dan tinggi gelombang diperoleh dari hasil luaran model Wavewatch III (WWIII) selama kurun waktu 9 tahun dari tahun 2005 sampai 2013 sebagai data penelitian yang di validasi dengan Altimetri kemudian diolah menggunakan software GrADS dan Ferret. Pengaruh angin pada musim tertentu dapat mempengaruhi panjang dan tinggi gelombang signifikan yang terjadi di Perairan Indonesia. Perairan Selatan Jawa pada musim Timur lebih besar nilainya (panjang gelombang mencapai 450 m dan tinggi gelombangnya mencapai 6 m), di Laut Jawa pada Musim Barat (panjang gelombang mencapai 120 m dan tinggi gelombang mencapai 3 m). Di Selat Karimata pada Musim Barat (panjang gelombang mencapai 210 m dan tinggi gelombang mencapai 3,5 m). Di Selat Makassar pada Musim Barat (panjang gelombang mencapai 270 m dan tinggi gelombang mencapai 2 m) dan di Laut Arafuru pada Musim Barat (panjang gelombang mencapai 210 m dan tinggi gelombang mencapai 3,5 m). Berdasarkan parameter panjang gelombang untuk tipe KRI yang direkomendasikan beroperasi di wilayah Perairan Indonesia yaitu kapal dengan ukuran dengan panjang lebih dari 100 m. Sehingga kapal tersebut dapat dioperasionalkan di Perairan Indonesia pada saat Musim Barat maupun Musim Timur. Kapal yang dapat dioperasionalkan adalah KRI tipe Frigatte, Corvette, Amphibious dan Auxiliaries. Sedangkan dilihat dari parameter tinggi gelombang untuk tipe KRI yang dapat beroperasi di wilayah Perairan Indonesia baik pada saat Musim Barat maupun Musim Timur yaitu semua tipe KRI antara lain KRI tipe Frigatte, Corvette, Patrol Forces, Amphibious Forces, Mine Warfare Forces, Training Ships dan Auxiliaries.

To enable flexible model coupling in coastal inundation studies, a coupling framework based on the Earth System Modeling Framework (ESMF) and the National Unified Operational Prediction Capability (NUOPC) technologies under a common modeling framework called the NOAA Environmental Modeling System (NEMS) was developed. The framework is essentially a software wrapper around atmospheric, wave and storm surge models that enables its components communicate seamlessly, and efficiently to run in massively parallel environments. For the first time, we are introducing the flexible coupled application of the ADvanced CIRCulation model (ADCIRC) and unstructured fully implicit WAVEWATCH III including NUOPC compliant caps to read Hurricane Weather Research and Forecasting Model (HWRF) generated forcing fields. We validated the coupled application for a laboratory test and a full scale inundation case of the Hurricane Ike, 2008, on a high resolution mesh covering the whole US Atlantic coast. We showed that how nonlinear interaction between surface waves and total water level results in significant enhancements and progression of the inundation and wave action into land in and around the hurricane landfall region. We also presented that how the maximum wave setup and maximum surge regions may happen at the various times and locations depending on the storm track and geographical properties of the landfall area.
