The intensity of the electrodynamic action of currents of a short circuit on the flexible conductors of overhead lines depends on the magnitude of currents of short-circuit. The commis sioning of new capacities is inevitably accompanied by an increase in short circuit currents in the nodes of the grid, so the need to limit peaks of tension arising in a short-circuit can acquire a special relevance at a certain stage of development of the power system. At short circuit currents over 40 kA the mechanical force and displacement of the wires can have a decisive influence on the structural performance of flexible bus as of single wires as well as of split phases. In this regard there is a need for the development and use of new structural elements enhancing electrodynamic stability of flexible busbars of outdoor switchgear. One such element is a tension damper. The damper is installed between the portal and the insulator string and limits the transmission of undesirable forces on the portals in a short circuit. The numerical method of calculation of dynamics of flexible wires of switchgear and overhead lines in a short-circuit taking into account influence of a tension damper has been developed. This method was used for modification of the computer program of calculation of electrodynamic stability. With the aid of the computer program it was demonstrated that the installation of the tension damper makes it possible to cut off peaks of the tension of wire in a short circuit at the initial stage of movement of the conductors. However, in spans of a great length after the actuation of the damper the occurrence of new bursts of tension is possible due to the sudden stop of the wire.

The initiation of a leader is an important lightning discharge process, but how an upward positive leader (UPL) initiates is still not fully understood. The evolution characteristics of a UPL during its initial stage was systematically studied based on directly measured current data of 14 triggered lightning events in 2019. It was found that the initial stage of triggered lightning can be divided into two types: a single initial process form and a multiple initial process form, with percentages of 64.29% and 35.71%, respectively. Compared with the former, the latter usually lasts longer, and the corresponding lightning is often triggered under a lower ground-level quasi-static electric field. In each initial process, precursor current pulses (PCPs), PCP clusters and initial precursor current pulse (IPCPs) are typical current waveforms, and the pulse durations and transferred charges of PCPs increase linearly with time. However, in the multiple initial process form, the pulse durations and transferred charges of PCPs will reduce significantly after each previous initial process and then continue to increase in the following initial process. In each initial process, when the pulse duration and transferred charge of a PCP increase to a certain extent, PCP clusters and IPCPs begin to appear. For the emergence of PCP clusters, the average values of the threshold are 3.48 μs and 19.53 μC, respectively. For the occurrence of IPCPs, the corresponding values are 4.69 μs and 27.23 μC, respectively. The average values of pulse durations and transferred charges of IPCPs are larger than those of PCP clusters. Compared with adjacent PCP clusters, IPCPs contain more pulses, with a critical range of 6–7. IPCPs also last longer, and have a critical range of 138–198 μs.

The spectrum analysis of the lightning current in the experiment campaign of 2019 reveals that the lightning current waveform contains rich medium-frequency (MF) radiation signals in the initial stage. However, there is a lack of resolution for MF signals by using conventional magnetic sensors. The bandwidth of radio-frequency magnetic field measurement is improved by extending to 20 kHz–1.2 MHz in the Guangdong Comprehensive Observation Experiment on Lightning Discharge (GCOELD). During the previously noticed “quiet period” that can only maintain the upward propagation with relatively small-scale breakdown, magnetic pulses of quiet period (MPQPs) are discerned more clearly than the previous experiment in GCOELD. Aided by the improvement of a magnetic sensor, this paper captures richer magnetic field signals radiated from the weak discharge of the precursory phage than previous experiments in GCOELD. The analysis shows that both aborted UPLs and UPLs are caused by weak discharge pulses called initial precursor pulses (IPPs), which are very similar to the amplitude of the streamer discharge obtained in the laboratory. In summary, the signals detected by an improved magnetic sensor will provide an important reference for exploring the pulse characteristics of the whole discharge process and formation mechanism of the UPL in the initial stage of triggered lightning.
