The Enabling FAIR Data project is an international, community-driven effort in the Earth, space, and environmental sciences that promotes that the data and software supporting our research is to be deposited in a community-accepted, trusted repository and cited in the paper. Journals will no longer accept data only placed in the supplemental information of the paper. The supplement is not an archive and does not provide the necessary information about the data, nor is there any way to discover the data separate from the paper. Repositories provide the critical infrastructure in our research ecosystem, managing and preserving data and software for future researchers to discovery and use.

As a signatory of the Enabling FAIR Data Commitment Statement repositories agree to comply with the defined tenets. Not all repositories provide the same level of services to researchers or their data holdings. Many researchers find it difficult to select the right repository and understand the process for depositing their data. Through better coordination between journals and repositories journals can guide researchers to the right repository for deposition. This is a significant benefit to authors, but there are unintended challenges that result. Here we will discuss the Enabling FAIR Data project, the successes, and the continued effort necessary to make sure our data is treated as a “world heritage.”

In most African states, joining higher education institutions (HEIs) is, for students, an investment in their own economic progress. Yet, HEIs are sites where sexual harassment and gender-based violence (GBV) occur, increasing the vulnerability of newly enrolled female students and of women in general. A strong gender policy environment, a clear stand by senior management at HEIs, and the empowerment ofmen with respect to gender equity issues are remedies to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), goal 4 (Quality Education), goal 5 (Gender Equality), and goal 10 (Reduced Inequality).

Female and male physicians practice medicine differently. Female physicians engage in different communication styles, allocate more time to preventative care, and show different leadership qualities. Because gender diversity is still lacking in the top academic and clinical positions, medical organizations are not fully benefiting from these strengths. This chapter will identify three barriers that prevent women from advancing to these positions: the double burden syndrome, sexism and sexual harassment, and gender bias. This chapter will take a critical look at organizational culture and propose changes that can contribute to the pursuit of gender equity.

This article analyses how the representation of women legislators may affect the oversight of national ICT policy. The article uses Critical Mass Theory (CMT) to explain the composition of the Media and Communications Committee (MCC) of parliament. The case of Malawi is analysed, which represented a low-income economy in Africa. The article uses electoral reports and legislative documents. The results show that women legislators in the MCC achieved a critical mass despite the decrease in the representation of women in parliament. The women legislators have the opportunity to support gender issues related to ICT legislations and national ICT policy oversight. However, the functions of MCC related to national ICT policy oversight were not aligned with the gender equity strategies. This may affect the priority of gender issues in the policy oversight. The article contributes towards literature on national ICT policy oversight in the context of developing countries.
