Hydrostatic pressure is known to protect fish from damage by total dissolved gas (TDG) supersaturation, but empirical relationships are lacking. In this study we demonstrate the relationship between depth, TDG, and gas bubble trauma (GBT). Hydroelectric dams generate TDG supersaturation that causes bubble growth in the tissues of aquatic animals, resulting in sublethal and lethal effects. We exposed fish to 100%, 115%, 120%, and 130% TDG at 16 and 63 cm of depth and recorded time to 50% loss of equilibrium and sublethal symptoms. Our linear model of the log-transformed time to 50% LOE (R2 = 0.94) was improved by including depth. Based on our model, a depth of 47 cm compensated for the effects of 4.1% (±1.3% SE) TDG supersaturation. Our experiment reveals that once the surface threshold for GBT from TDG supersaturation is known, depth protects rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) from GBT by 9.7% TDG supersaturation per metre depth. Our results can be used to estimate the impacts of TDG on fish downstream of dams and to develop improved guidelines for TDG.

We consider ontology-mediated queries (OMQs) based on an EL ontology and an atomic query (AQ), provide an ultimately fine-grained analysis of data complexity and study rewritability into linear Datalog-aiming to capture linear recursion in SQL. Our main results are that every such OMQ is in AC0, NL-complete or PTime-complete, and that containment in NL coincides with rewritability into linear Datalog (whereas containment in AC0 coincides with rewritability into first-order logic). We establish natural characterizations of the three cases, show that deciding linear Datalog rewritability (as well as the mentioned complexities) is ExpTime-complete, give a way to construct linear Datalog rewritings when they exist, and prove that there is no constant bound on the arity of IDB relations in linear Datalog rewritings.

This paper is a review of existing knowledge on cavitation nuclei. The lack of significant tensions in ordinary liquids is due to so-called weak spots or cavitation nuclei. The various forms which have been proposed for nuclei are gas bubbles, gas in a crevice, gas bubble with organic skin, and a hydrophobic solid. The stability argument leading to the postulation of the Harvey model is reviewed. Aspects of bubble growth are considered and it is shown that bubbles having different initial sizes will undergo vaporous cavitation at different liquid tensions. The three modes of growth, namely vaporous, pseudo, and gaseous are presented and implications concerning the interpretation of data are considered. The question of the source of nuclei and implications concerning scale effects are made. The measurement of nuclei is considered together with experiments on the effect of gas content on incipient cavitation.

An Al-4.57Mg-0.35Mn-0.2Sc-0.09Zr (wt. %) alloy was studied in the fine-grained state obtaining after equal channel angular pressing. The mechanical behavior of alloy at the temperatures 173 K, 298 K and 348 K and at strain rate 1×10–3 s–1 is studied. Increase of the temperature testing from 173 K to 348 K decreases the yield stress by 80 MPa, the ultimate tensile strength by 60 MPa while elongation-to failure increases by a factor of 1.4. It was found that at temperatures of 298 and 173 K, the studied alloy mainly demonstrates the mode of ductile fracture, and at a temperature of 348 K the mechanism can be described as mixed ductile-brittle fracture. It was also established that of the studied alloy is the temperature dependence of the size of the dimples on the fracture surface. The formation of smaller dimples in the samples deformed at 298 K was observed.

This paper concerns research into the importance of the interfacial transition zone around inclusions of selected materials in fine-grained cement-based composite. Tests were performed on eight sets of prismatic test specimens. The sets differed in the inclusion materials used, which were placed at midspan above the initial central edge notch. The first was a reference set without any inclusion, the second contained a steel inclusion, four more contained different types of rock inclusion, the seventh contained an inclusion of extruded polystyrene, and the last contained a space of the same dimensions as that occupied by the inclusions in sets 2 to 7. The test specimens were subjected to three-point bending fracture tests at the age of (usually) 28 days. The fracture response was analysed by means of fracture mechanics theory, and apparent mechanical fracture parameters (modulus of elasticity, fracture toughness and fracture energy) were evaluated. The conclusion shows that a possible relationship exists between the differences in the mechanical fracture parameters of specimens with/without an inclusion and the existence of the interfacial transition zone.
