Οι σεισμικές ακολουθίες χαρακτηρίζονται συχνά από διακριτά μοτίβα, όπως χωρικές και χρονικές συστάδες, μονόπλευρη, αμφίπλευρη ή ακτινική μετανάστευση υποκέντρων και εξάρσεις στο ρυθμό σεισμικότητας. Αυτά εξαρτώνται από τη γεωμετρία του δικτύου ρηγμάτων, το καθεστώς τάσεων περιφερειακής κλίμακας με τοπικές ανωμαλίες εξαιτίας ανακατανομής τάσεων ύστερα από ισχυρά γεγονότα ή ασεισμικούς παράγοντες όπως ερπυσμό και διάχυση ρευστών υπό πίεση. Είναι σύνηθες στη χωρικά συσταδοποιημένη σεισμικότητα να εμφανίζονται σεισμοί με όμοιες εστιακές παραμέτρους (σμηνοσεισμοί, ή multiplets), οι οποίοι παράγουν όμοιες σεισμικές αναγραφές. Στην παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή αξιοποιείται το φαινόμενο της ομοιότητας κυματομορφών με σκοπό τη βελτίωση της χωροχρονικής κατανομής των σεισμών ενός καταλόγου, τόσο σε ποσότητα δεδομένων, μέσω μεθόδων ημιαυτόματης ανίχνευσης και εντοπισμού, όσο και σε ποιότητα, εφαρμόζοντας επαναπροσδιορισμό υψηλής ευκρίνειας με τη μέθοδο των διπλών διαφορών που ελαχιστοποιεί τις αβεβαιότητες των σχετικών υποκεντρικών θέσεων. Η προτιμώμενη μέθοδος για τη μέτρηση της ομοιότητας κυματομορφών είναι το μέγιστο της συνάρτησης ετεροσυσχέτισης στο πεδίο του χρόνου. Τα χαρακτηριστικά της εξετάζονται ως προς διάφορες παραμέτρους, όπως τα συχνοτικά φίλτρα που εφαρμόζονται, το μήκος παραθύρου και η διάρκεια της σεισμικής πηγής, καθώς και τη βέλτιστη τιμή κατωφλίου για συσταδοποίηση με σύνδεση του «πλησιέστερου γείτονα». Αναπτύχθηκε μια ημιαυτόματη μέθοδος προσδιορισμού χρόνων άφιξης, βασισμένη στην τεχνική του «ανιχνευτή συσχέτισης» που αξιοποιεί την ομοιότητα κυματομορφών σε πολλαπλούς σταθμούς. Η μέθοδος αυτή έχει τροποποιηθεί σε έναν υβριδικό αλγόριθμο που συνδυάζει την αυξημένη ανιχνευσιμότητα ενός μεμονωμένου σταθμού με έναν υψηλής ευαισθησίας αυτόματο αλγόριθμο προσδιορισμού του χρόνου άφιξης σεισμικών φάσεων, ο οποίος βασίζεται στο Κριτήριο Πληροφορίας του Akaike και σε στατιστική ανώτερης τάξεως (κύρτωση και λοξότητα). Περιγράφεται, επίσης, μία μέθοδος προσδιορισμού του μεγέθους σεισμικής ροπής μέσα από φασματική ανάλυση, με έμφαση σε τροποποιήσεις που επιτρέπουν τον υπολογισμό του σε τοπικούς μικροσεισμούς με στενό συχνοτικό εύρος και χαμηλό λόγο σήματος προς θόρυβο. Οι αλγόριθμοι που αναπτύχθηκαν επιτρέπουν τον δεκαπλασιασμό της ποσότητας σεισμών ενός σεισμικού καταλόγου και τη βελτίωση της πληρότητάς του κατά περίπου μία τάξη μεγέθους.Παρουσιάζονται διάφορες μελέτες περιπτώσεων που περιλαμβάνουν πρότυπα μετασεισμικών ακολουθιών (όπως για τους σεισμούς της Ανδραβίδας το 2008, της Κεφαλονιάς το 2014 και της Λευκάδας το 2015) καθώς και σεισμικών σμηνών (όπως στη Λίμνη Τριχωνίδα το 2007, την Οιχαλία το 2011 και την Ελίκη το 2013). Η κύρια περιοχή μελέτης είναι ο δυτικός Κορινθιακός Κόλπος, με ειδική έμφαση σε σεισμούς που καταγράφηκαν την περίοδο 2000-2007 από το τοπικό δίκτυο Corinth Rift Laboratory (CRL). Οι επαναπροσδιορισμένοι κατάλογοι, ύστερα από χωρική συσταδοποίηση και διαχωρισμό σε διαδοχικές χρονικές περιόδους, διερευνώνται μέσω πολλαπλών εγκάρσιων τομών και χωροχρονικών προβολών. Η εξέλιξη του ιστορικού των σμηνοσεισμών δίνει μία εικόνα για τον τρόπο με τον οποίο εξαπλώνεται η σεισμικότητα σε νέα τμήματα ρηγμάτων που δεν είχαν διαρρηχθεί, την προϋπάρχουσα δραστηριότητα σε περιοχές που αργότερα έδωσαν ισχυρές σεισμικές συστάδες και την επαναλαμβανόμενη σεισμικότητα σε τμήματα ρηξιγενών ζωνών. Όπου τα δεδομένα το επιτρέπουν, κατασκευάζονται σύνθετοι μηχανισμοί γένεσης για χωρικές συστάδες ή ομάδες σμηνοσεισμών που βοηθούν συμπληρωματικά στην ερμηνεία της χωρικής ανάλυσης και τον προσδιορισμό των ενεργοποιημένων ρηξιγενών δομών. Αναζητούνται μοτίβα χωροχρονικής σεισμικής μετανάστευσης που αποκαλύπτουν την πιθανή επίδραση ρευστών κατά τη διάρκεια σεισμικών σμηνών και προσδιορίζονται παράμετροι όπως η υδραυλική διαχυτικότητα και η ταχύτητα μετανάστευσης. Τέλος, εξετάζεται η συνεισφορά ασεισμικών παραγόντων μέσα από μοντέλα ETAS (Μετασεισμική Ακολουθία Σποραδικού Τύπου) που παρέχουν, επιπροσθέτως, πληροφορία για την παραγωγικότητα μετασεισμών και τον ρυθμό απόσβεσης.

Waveform Cross‐Correlation for Differential Time Measurement: Bias and Limitations

ABSTRACT The waveform cross‐correlation technique is a popular tool for estimating the differential times of seismic phases in a fast and reliable manner. Differential times are used for a variety of methods, with the double‐difference relocation method HypoDD being the most popular. In this work, we analyzed the precision and possible error of cross‐correlated differential times by conducting a simple comparison with reference manual datasets. Our study was carried out on two well‐studied mainshock–aftershock datasets from the seismically active West Bohemia region (Czechia). We observed that the magnitude difference δML between two cross‐correlated earthquakes presents a significant bias, resulting in the over‐ or underestimation of the final differential time of both P and S waves. The earthquakes of differing magnitudes exhibit unequal first pulse durations in otherwise similar waveforms. As a result, the cross‐correlated differential time, which shifts seismograms to the position of maximum cross‐correlation, is different from the differential time between phase arrivals. Our test cases revealed that the resulting deviation from the true differential time depends on the actual δML and can reach values higher than 0.025 s when δML>2. Hence, in standard differential time datasets, the error has a greater impact on the data related to strong events—mainshocks. In HypoDD applications, the error leads to mislocations of mainshocks, and at the same time, the locations of the weak events are improved. We demonstrate the mislocation potential of the error on relocated hypocenters of mainshock–aftershock sequences and earthquake swarms from West Bohemia, as well as on synthetic tests. The error cannot be avoided by changing the cross‐correlated window length or filtration. We propose a few suggestions to suppress the consequences of the magnitude difference data bias. Nonetheless, the differential times error and its effects cannot currently be completely suppressed using the mentioned methods.

Repeating earthquakes follow afterslip gradient in the aftermath of the 16th April 2016 M7.8 Pedernales earthquake in Ecuador

<p>Repeating earthquakes are earthquakes that repeatedly break a single, time-invariant fault patch. They are generally associated with aseismic slip, which is thought to load asperities, leading to repeated rupture. Repeating earthquakes are therefore useful tools to study aseismic slip and fault mechanics, with possible applications to earthquake triggering, loading rates and earthquake forecasting.</p><p>In this study, we analyze one year of aftershocks following the 16<sup>th</sup> April 2016 Mw 7.8 Pedernales earthquake in Ecuador to find repeating families, using data recorded by permanent and temporary seismological stations. In our area, seismicity during both the inter-seismic and post-seismic periods has been previously linked to aseismic slip. We calculate waveform cross-correlation coefficients (CC) on all available catalogue events, which we use to sort events into preliminary families, using a minimum CC of 0.95. These events were then stacked and used to perform template-matching on the continuous data. In total, 376 earthquakes were classified into 62 families of 4 to 15 earthquakes, including 8 from the one-year period before the mainshock. We later relocated these earthquakes using a double-difference method, which confirmed that most of them did have overlapping sources.</p><p>Repeating earthquakes seem to concentrate largely around the areas of largest afterslip release, where afterslip gradient is the highest. We also find an increase in the recurrence time of repeating events with time after the mainshock, over the first year of the postseismic period, which highlights a possible timeframe for the afterslip’s deceleration. Our results suggest that while most repeating aftershocks are linked to afterslip release, the afterslip gradient may play a bigger role in determining their location than previously thought.</p>

We use shear wave splitting (SWS) analysis and double-difference relocation to examine temporal variations in seismic properties prior to and accompanying magmatic activity associated with the 2008 eruption of Okmok volcano, Alaska. Using bispectrum cross-correlation, a multiplet of 25 earthquakes is identified spanning five years leading up to the eruption, each event having first motions compatible with a normal fault striking NE-SW. Cross-correlation differential times are used to relocate earthquakes occurring between January 2003 and February 2009. The bulk of the seismicity prior to the onset of the eruption on 12 July 2008 occurred southwest of the caldera beneath a geothermal field. Earthquakes associated with the onset of the eruption occurred beneath the northern portion of the caldera and started as deep as 13 km. Subsequent earthquakes occurred predominantly at 3 km depth, coinciding with the depth at which the magma body has been modeled using geodetic data. Automated SWS analysis of the Okmok catalog reveals radial polarization outside the caldera and a northwest-southeast polarization within. We interpret these polarizations in terms of a magma reservoir near the center of the caldera, which we model with a Mogi point source. SWS analysis using the same input processing parameters for each event in the multiplet reveals no temporal changes in anisotropy over the duration of the multiplet, suggesting either a short-term or small increase in stress just before the eruption that was not detected by GPS, or eruption triggering by a mechanism other than a change of stress in the system. © 2010 by the American Geophysical Union.
