(η3-Allyl)(η5-cyclopentadienyl)palladium reacts with bis(diphenylphosphino)maleic anhydride to form a complex in which the C5H5 ligand is inserted into a P-C bond of the phosphine ligand. Reaction of this compound with iodine leads to a new type of phosphino ligand. The structure is studied by X-ray crystal structure analysis.

The crystal structure of the R 2SnS5 (R = Pr, Nd, Gd and Tb) compounds has been investigated using X-ray single-crystal diffraction. Crystal architecture and structural relationships among U3S5, Y2HfS5, R 2SnS5 compounds are discussed and a structural origin is determined. It is shown that the complex architecture of the crystal structure of Eu5Sn3S12 is a result of interweaving of the simple crystal structures. The location of the copper ions in the non-stoichiometric compound Y2Cu0.20Sn0.95S5 is proposed on the basis of comparative analysis of the R—S interatomic distances in the R 2SnS5 series of compounds.

Ba0331 is a putative polysaccharide deacetylase from Bacillus anthracis, the etiological agent of the disease anthrax, that contributes to adaptation of the bacterium under extreme conditions and to maintenance of the cell shape. In the present study, the crystal structure of Ba0331 was determined at 2.6 Å resolution. The structure consists of two domains: a fibronectin type 3-like (Fn3-like) domain and a NodB catalytic domain. The latter is present in all carbohydrate esterase family 4 enzymes, while a comparative analysis of the Fn3-like domain revealed structural plasticity despite the retention of the conserved Fn3-like domain characteristics.

Square-planar rhodium(I) complexes [RhCl(iPr2PC2H4Y)2] (8, 9) containing one chelating and one P-bonded monodentate phosphine ligand are prepared from [RhCl(C8H14)2]2 (7) and the new functionalized phosphines iPr2PC2H4Y (5,6). Reaction of 9 (Y = NMe2) with CO and of 8 (Y = OMe) with CO, C2H4, C2H2, C2Ph2 and HC2Ph leads to opening of the chelate ring and formation of the complexes trans-[RhCl(L)(η1-P–iPr2PC2H4Y)2] (10-15). Treatment of 8 with H2 gives the dihydridorhodium(III) compound [RhH2Cl(iPr2PC2H4OMe)2] (16). The vinylidene complexes trans-[RhCl(=C=CHR)(η1-P– iPr2PC2H4OMe)2] (17, 18) are obtained by thermal or pyridine promoted rearrangement of 13 (L = C2H2) and 15 (L = HC2Ph). 13 and 15 have also been used as starting materials for the synthesis of the cyclopentadienyl alkyne and vinylidene complexes 19-21. The X-ray crystal structure of the parent compound 8 was determined.

Abstract Isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was nucleated in-situ with calcium pimelate during melt compounding. Calcium pimelate is a highly effective β-nucleator for isotactic polypropylene (iPP). The β-nucleated iPP was characterized by wide angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) for its crystallinity and crystal structure. In addition, the injection-molded samples were tested for thermo-mechanical properties. It is found that very low quantity (< 0.1 wt. %) of β-nucleator is required to produce sufficiently high β-crystal fraction (Kβ) in isotactic polypropylene. β-nucleated iPP shows increment of 11 to 14 °C in its heat deflection temperature (HDT). It was also observed that slow cooling rate of β-nucleated iPP promotes the formation of β-crystals and that tensile stretching leads to complete transformation of β crystals into a-crystals at room temperature. It was also revealed that the presence of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MA), a well-known coupling agent (or compatibilizer), may reduce the (Kβ) value to a marginal extent. It was also observed that the thermo-mechanical properties were not much affected by the presence of PP-g-MA. Therefore, calcium pimelate may be used as β-nucleator in case of neat as well as reinforced polypropylene containing maleic anhydride as coupling agent.
