The D4σ-Z-scan technique is used to evaluate the sign and the magnitude of the nonlinear (NL) refractive index and the NL absorption (NLA) coefficient with a laser delivering single pulses in the picosecond regime at 355 nm, 532 nm and 1064 nm. The NL optical response of the zinc porphyrins (Pph) has been found to be significantly enhanced. The study of the NLA and refraction is performed, taking into account the time dependence and the spectral width of the incident laser. The variations of the NL coefficients as a function of the intensity and the concentration are provided and are found to be linear.

Vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) is the most stable phase among many transition metal vanadium oxides, and has already been widely used in many fields. In this study, the morphological, structural, and optical responses of V2O5 film to ultrafast laser irradiation was investigated. The third-order nonlinear optical properties of V2O5 film were measured by common Z-scan technique, and the results showed that V2O5 film has self-defocusing and saturable absorption characteristics. The third-order nonlinear absorption coefficient and nonlinear refractive index were calculated to be −338 cm/GW and −3.62 × 10−12 cm2/W, respectively. The tunable saturated absorption with modulation depth ranging from 13.8% to 29.3% was realized through controlling the thickness of vanadium pentoxide film. V2O5 film was irradiated by ultrafast laser with variable pulse energy, and the morphological and structural responses of the V2O5 to the laser with different energy densities were investigated. The irreversible morphological and structural responses of V2O5 films to ultrafast laser irradiation was analyzed using the phase-contrast microscope and Raman spectrum. The chemical structure change from V2O5 to V6O13 was considered the main reason for refractive index modification.

The analytical expressions allowed to calculate the third-, fifth- and seventh-order monochromatic and chromatic aberrations are obtained for the cylindrical volume holographic optical element by method of the characteristic function. The formulas for coefficients of third-, fifth- and seventh-order aberrations are presented. It is noted that coefficients of the aberrations arising because of photo induced, thermally induced and deformation changes of refractive index and of sizes of the cylindrical volume holographic optical element can be isolated in these coefficients. It is shown that width of the working spectral range for reflection cylindrical volume holographic optical element is inversely proportional to its thickness and for transmission holographic element is inversely proportional to square its thickness

AbstractThe simple and quick calibration surfaces method has been applied to the quantitative analysis of water — ethanol — methanol mixtures. The refractive index, viscosity, boiling point, density, and position of the absorption band of the solvatochromic dye and the absorbance of the band corresponding to a particular wavelength were used as measured magnitudes which are functionally related to the quantitative composition of the mixture. The 3rd order surface equation was fitted to the experimental data via the multidimensional regression method. Various pairs of macroscopic features were tested to obtain the best results. To find the solution, the set of three equations were calculated, in which two equations were the mathematical description of particular macroscopic features; the third one resulted from the definition of mass fraction. The detection and determination limits as well as the error of the method were determined which proved that the refractive index and the density were the most adequate pair of macroscopic features.

The refractive index of sulphur dioxide for a single wave-length has been measured several times, and in a recent paper it was shown that nearly all the values, when corrected for density, approximated to μ –1=0·000661 for sodium light. The dispersion has only been measured once, by Ketteler, who found the numbers given in the second column below— When corrected for density, these become the numbers given in the third column.

Titanium dioxide (titania) is a cheap, nontoxic and highly efficient photocatalyst being extensively applied for the degradation of organic pollutants, air purification, water splitting, reduction of nitrogen to ammonia, and optical devices due to its optical behaviors. The third-order nonlinear optical properties of TiO 2/ PS nano-composite were studied by means of single beam transmission technique, using a continuous-wave (CW) He - Ne laser beam with a wavelength of 632.8 nm with three different incident intensities. The magnitude and sign of the third-order nonlinear refractive index ( n 2) and nonlinear absorption (β) of TiO 2/ PS nano-composite were determined by use of both the closed-aperture and opened-aperture z -scan techniques. Z -scan technique, developed by Sheik-Bahae et al., has been used widely in material characterization. A single-beam (also called z -scan method) for measuring the sign and magnitude of nonlinear refraction that has simplicity and very high sensitivity has been reported recently. Optical limiting property of TiO 2/ PS nano-composite is studied. The positive sign obtained for nonlinear refractive index indicated that there is a self-focusing effect in the sample. The nonlinear refractive index was in order of 10-8 (cm2/W) and the nonlinear absorption coefficient was obtained in order of 10-2 (cm/W) with negative sign. The values of nonlinear refractive index and nonlinear absorption coefficient are enhanced by decreasing the intensity.

The Z-scan technique was employed to explore the third-order nonlinear optical properties of disperse red 13 organic chromophore solutions in tetrahydrofuran. A continuous-wave He–Ne laser (632.8 nm) was used as a source of irradiation. The nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refractive index coefficients of this dye were investigated. The results showed that this dye has a good nonlinear response with its real and imaginary quantities of third-order susceptibility. The solutions showed negative nonlinear refraction. The best obtained value of the third-order susceptibility was 6.37 × 10–3 esu at a dye concentration of 3.15 × 10–4 mol/L. Moreover, the nonlinear optical properties were enhanced with higher dye concentrations, and an elevated trend in nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refractive index coefficients was observed. Also, it was found that the reverse saturable absorption was the main mechanism responsible for the two-photon absorption effect in DSR13/THF samples.

Plasmonic gold nanorods play important roles in nowadays state-of-the-art plasmonic sensing techniques. Most of the previous studies and applications focused on gold nanorods with relatively small aspect ratios, where the plasmon wavelengths are smaller than 900 nm. Gold nanorods with large aspect ratios are predicted to exhibit high refractive-index sensitivity (Langmir 2008, 24, 5233–5237), which therefore should be promising for the development of high-performance plasmonic chemical- and bio-sensors. In this study, we developed gold nanorods with aspect ratios over 7.9, which exhibit plasmon resonances around 1064 nm. The refractive index (RI) sensitivity of these nanorods have been evaluated by varying their dielectric environment, whereby a sensitivity as high as 473 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) can be obtained. Furthermore, we have demonstrated the large-aspect-ratio nanorods as efficient substrate for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), where an enhancement factor (EF) as high as 9.47 × 108 was measured using 4-methylbenzenethiol (4-MBT) as probe molecule. Finally, a type of flexible SERS substrate is developed by conjugating the gold nanorods with the polystyrene (PS) polymer. The results obtained in our study can benefit the development of plasmonic sensing techniques utilized in the near-infrared spectral region.
