A ‘Switch’ catalysis method is reviewed whereby a single catalyst is switched between ring-opening polymerization and ring-opening copolymerization cycles. It allows the efficient synthesis of block copolymers from mixtures of lactones, epoxides, anhydrides and carbon dioxide. In order to use and further develop such ‘Switch’ catalysis, it is important to understand how to monitor the catalysis and characterize the product block copolymers. Here, a step-by-step guide to both the catalysis and the identification of block copolymers is presented. This article is part of a discussion meeting issue ‘Providing sustainable catalytic solutions for a rapidly changing world’.

A new type of hetero-grafted molecular bottlebrush with polypeptide as backbone was synthesized using graft-onto strategy. Poly(γ-propargyl-L-glutamate) (PPLG) as backbone was firstly synthesized via ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of γ-propargyl-L-glutamate (PLG) N-carboxyanhydride (NCA). Next, polystyrene-N3 (PS-N3) and monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol)-N3 (mPEG-N3) as side chains were grafted onto the PPLG backbone using copper-catalyzed click reaction, which afforded good grafting density and efficiency. Two polypeptide bottlebrushes with PS-to-mPEG molar ratio at 70/30 and 30/70 were prepared. The self-assembly behaviors of these two polypeptide bottlebrushes were investigated using the cosolvent method, and their supramolecular structures were characterized using light scattering (LS) and electron microscopy.

The convergence of artificial intelligence and machine learning with material science holds significant promise to rapidly accelerate development timelines of new high-performance polymeric materials. Within this context, we report an inverse design strategy for polycarbonate and polyester discovery based on a recommendation system that proposes polymerization experiments that are likely to produce materials with targeted properties. Following recommendations of the system driven by the historical ring-opening polymerization results, we carried out experiments targeting specific ranges of monomer conversion and dispersity of the polymers obtained from cyclic lactones and carbonates. The results of the experiments were in close agreement with the recommendation targets with few false negatives or positives obtained for each class.<br>
