A new polyiminofluorene with conjugated bis(methylbenzimidazolyl)pyridine ligands in the side chain has been synthesized. Ionochromism of the polymer and electrochromic behaviour after coordinative layer-by-layer assembly into ultrathin films are described.

We present a review of the theoretical and experimental evidence for the peculiar properties of comb copolymers, demonstrating the uniqueness of these materials among other polymer architectures. These special properties include an increase in stiffness upon increasing side-chain length, the spontaneous curvature of adsorbed combs, rod–globule transition, and specific intramolecular self-assembly. We also propose a theory of chemically heterogeneous surface nanopattern formation in ultrathin films of comblike macromolecules containing two different types (A and B) of incompatible side chains (so-called binary combs). Side chains of the binary combs are strongly adsorbed on a surface and segregated with respect to the backbone. The thickness of surface domains formed by the B side chains is controlled by the interaction with the substrate. We predict the stability of direct and inverse disc-, torus- and stripelike nanostructures. Phase diagrams of the film are constructed.

The title compound, (5,10,15,20-tetra-4-pyridylporphyrinato)zinc(II) 1,2-dichlorobenzene disolvate, [Zn(C40H24N8)]·2C6H4Cl2, contains a clathrate-type structure. It is composed of two-dimensional square-grid coordination networks of the self-assembled porphyrin moiety, which are stacked one on top of the other in a parallel manner. The interporphyrin cavities of the overlapping networks combine into channel voids accommodated by the dichlorobenzene solvent. Molecules of the porphyrin complex are located on crystallographic inversion centres. The observed two-dimensional assembly mode of the porphyrin units represents a supramolecular isomer of the unique three-dimensional coordination frameworks of the same porphyrin building block observed earlier. The significance of this study lies in the discovery of an additional supramolecular isomer of the rarely observed structures of metalloporphyrins self-assembled directly into extended coordination polymers without the use of external ligand or metal ion auxiliaries.

In this study, self-assembled alternating film using poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDAC) and meso-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (MTCP) was prepared as a multilayer deposition on glass substrate. This preparation technique for dye deposition may provide new feasibilities to achieve the manufacture of ultrathin films for nanotechnology application. The deposition films were characterized by UV-vis spectrophotometer and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) analysis. The results of UV-vis spectra showed that the absorbance characteristic of the multilayer films linearly increased with an increased number of PDDAC and MTCP bilayers. AFM analysis showed the film surface was relatively uniform and the progressive growth of layers was determined.
