Bismuth oxychloride photocatalysts were obtained using solvothermal synthesis and different additives (CTAB—cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAC—cetyltrimethylammonium chloride, PVP–polyvinylpyrrolidone, SDS–sodium dodecylsulphate, U—urea and TU—thiourea). The effect of the previously mentioned compounds was analyzed applying structural (primary crystallite size, crystal phase composition, etc.), morphological (particle geometry), optical (band gap energy) parameters, surface related properties (surface atoms’ oxidation states), and the resulted photocatalytic activity. A strong dependency was found between the surface tension of the synthesis solutions and the overall morpho-structural parameters. The main finding was that the characteristics of the semiconductors can be tuned by modifying the surface tension of the synthesis mixture. It was observed after the photocatalytic degradation, that the white semiconductor turned to grey. Furthermore, we attempted to explain the gray color of BiOCl catalysts after the photocatalytic decompositions by Raman and XPS studies.

Viscosity and surface tension measurements of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in presence and absence of Na2SO4 and MgSO4 in aqueous media are reported. The results showed an increase in viscosity with increase in concentration of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide in presence and absence of salts where as the decrease in surface tension with increase in concentration of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide in presence and absence of salts. The viscosity of CTAB was observed lowest in pure water and increases in presence of MgSO4 and then more increases in presence of Na2SO4 where as the surface tension of CTAB was observed highest in pure water and decreases in presence of Na2SO4 and then more decreases in presence of MgSO4.The critical micelle concentration (cmc) of CTAB decreases in presence of salts in both viscosity and surface tension measurements. The decreasing cmc of CTAB are found to be more in the presence of Na2SO4 in comparison with the presence of MgSO4 for both measurements. The graphs of viscosity versus log[C] and the surface tension versus log[C] are used in determining the critical micelle concentration (cmc).        BIBECHANA 14 (2017) 77-85

The micellization behavior of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in water , 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 volume fractions of methanol at 298.15, 308.15, 318.15, and 323.15 K were investigated by surface tension measurements. The effect of methanol on values of critical micelle concentration (cmc), free energies of micellization ΔGmo, and surface properties viz. maximum surface excess concentration Γmax, area occupied by per surfactant molecule Amin, surface pressure πcmc, solution surface tension γcmc, solvent surface tension (γo), free energies of adsorption ΔGadso, the efficiency of adsorption (pC20), effective Gibbs free energy ΔGeffo, and free energy of surface at equilibrium (Gmin) were investigated using surface tension values. Other parameters such as the packing parameter (P), aggregation number (N), concentration of surfactant in the bulk phase (C20), relation between Amin and πcmc, and correlation of slopes dγ/d log C, γo/γcmc, Γ/Γmax, cmc/C20, ΔGadso/ΔGmo, and cmc/pC20 with the volume fraction of methanol are calculated and discussed in the light of the experiment done.

SummaryIn order to optimize the use of caseins as surfactants, the surface tension, foaming capacity and stability were measured as a function of pH, ionic strength, protein concentration and polarity (modified by covalent binding of carbohydrates). We found that the caseins differ in their behaviour at the air/water interface with β-casein showing the greatest ability to decrease surface tension and to produce foams, due probably to its amphipathic structure. In experiments carried out at pH values close to pI, with low ionic strength and constant solubility (optimal conditions for foam formation), we observed a high surface hydrophobicity, a good accessibility and flexibility of peptidic side chains (evaluated by proteolysis), and a high foaming capacity parallelled by increased surface pressure. Foam stability of caseins was low compared to those of globular proteins such as β lactoglobulin.

The effect of ionic strength of soil water on surfactant-induced unsaturated flow is investigated for the anionic surfactant DOWFAX 8390. Instrumented infiltration experiments were performed to study the impact of surfactant and ionic strength of the soil-water solution on unsaturated flow. A solution having a measured surface tension of 68 mN/m was prepared with 0.014% w/w DOWFAX using distilled water and applied to the soil column instrumented with time domain reflectometry probes and pressure transducer equipped tensiometers. Results of the experiment were compared with those of pure water to investigate surfactant-induced flow and the corresponding influence of the ionic strength of soil water. The DOWFAX solution behaved like a solution having a surface tension of 49 mN/m, which was directly attributed to the interaction between the surfactant and soil water. Soil-moisture characteristic curves for soil wetted with water and DOWFAX were also measured, and a scaling relationship as a function of reduced surface tension is proposed.
