ABSTRACTThere is an increasing interest in sol-gel synthesis of nitrides. The ability to deposit films of these materials by dip- or spin-coating will increase the range of applications in which they are viable and is an important step toward general sol-gel processing of nitride materials.With transition metals, the ammono based analogue of the well established alkoxy route to gels is inherently difficult to control. Due to the basicity of the system, the overwhelming tendency is of the starting materials to favour particle growth which results in a precipitate rather than a stable emulsion, unless both environment and synthetic pathway are carefully controlled. Hence reports to date of sol-gel routes to nitrides describe production of powders. We report work on a sol-gel route to titanium nitride with the ammonolysis of titanium amides controlled by temperature and chemical moderators, resulting in stable emulsions useful for dip-coating.

ABSTRACTSol-Gel processing and Metallo-Organic Decomposition are contrasted from the thermodynamics and chemical reactivity points of view. Differences and similarities on precursor requirements, processing characteristics, processing intermediates, and product formation pathways are outlined. Some specific examples are presented and their reaction thermodynamics are compared. Some conclusions regarding thermo-dynamic versus kinetic control are drawn from these examples.

AbstractSol-gel synthesis of transitional metal oxides is one of the important technique to obtain the pure and homogenous materials at low temperature. In this work, Barium strontium titantate (BST) was synthesized by sol-gel processing using 2,4-pentadionate as the precursors of metal oxides. The Ba1−xSrxTiO3 was prepared for four values of x i.e. 0.2, 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6. The obtained powders were heated from 400 °C to 800 °C at the interval of 100 °C to determine the temperature of crystallization. The phase of the final products was investigated by x-ray diffraction (XRD). Two particle sizes (< 100 nm and 200-400 nm) were observed under the scanning electron microscope (SEM) of the heat treated xerogel. The dielectric properties were determined by impedance analyzer at the frequency of 1MHz and explained in detail for the different values of x.

ABSTRACTStandard sol-gel procedures have been modified to permit sol-gel synthesis to be performed at varying hydrogen ion concentrations and in a variety of organic solvents. These modifications greatly expand the variety of guest molecules that can be incorporated into nondense glassy environments. Processing conditions can be controlled such that the guest compounds generally retain their solution properties thereby allowing new molecular composites to be formed. Reported herein is the incorporation of both porphyrins and metalloporphyrins into silica matrices. Electronic absorption, vibrational, and excited state luminescence properties of the resulting composites clearly demonstrate that the molecular and electronic structure of the porphyrins and metalloporphyrins are preserved during sol-gel processing and in the ceramic matrices. This retention of properties has been shown for guest molecules doped into monoliths as well as films.

To identify the possibility of using GdAlO3 (GAO) as a buffer layer for YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) coated superconductor wire, we report the result of GAO deposition on SrTiO3 (STO) single crystal substrates by sol-gel processing. Precursor solution was prepared by dissolving stoichiometric quantities of gadolinium hexahydrate and aluminum isoproxide in a mixed binary solvent (2-4 pentanedione:methyl alcohol=1:1). The solutions were spin-coated on STO (100) single crystal substrates and heated at 500~1100 for 2 h in wet Ar-5% H2 atmosphere. A FESEM observation of the surface morphology of the GAO has shown that it has a very smooth surface with a faceted morphology indicating epitaxy. It was shown in x-ray diffraction characterization that epitaxial GAO films with epitaxial orientation relationship of (001)[112]GAO||(100)[110]STO have been grown on STO (100) substrates.
