The synthesis of α-nickel hydroxide has been achieved via a facile liquid-phase precipitation approach, using the mixed solvents of ethylene glycol and water as reaction medium at low temperature. The XRD characterization indicates that pure phase α-Ni(OH)2can be obtained under variable temperature and pH value. The products present a flower-like micro-/nano-structure assembled with curved nanosheets. The nanosheets have the width of 100~500 nm and the thickness of 20~70 nm. The cavities are formed in the structure due to the interconnection of curved nanosheets. The solvents play a key role in the formation of Ni(OH)2with different forms. Pure phase α-Ni(OH)2can only be synthesized in the mixed solvents of ethylene glycol and water. Cyclic voltammetry was applied to test the electrochemical activity of the as-synthesized α-Ni(OH)2. The findings suggest that the α-Ni(OH)2with a micro-/nano-structure exhibits excellent electrochemical activity, which may be considered as a promising candidate of electrode material.

Stability of nanofluids is one of the most important factors to ensure the most benefit of the properties of nanoparticles. Zinc oxide was used in the research with concentration between (0.2-1) wt. % with ethylene glycol base fluid. The stability of ZnO nanofluid was enhanced by adding two types of surfactants Tx-100 and Gum Arabic with concentration of (0.1-0.5) vol. % to stabilize the ZnO nanoparticles in the base fluid. The results showed that the Gum Arabic surfactant led to more stable fluid than that of Tx-100; this was shown from zeta potential and UV spectroscopy measurements. The thermal conductivity coefficient was also measured, and the results showed that the thermal conductivity increased with adding surfactant than without using a stabilizer.

AbstractPoly(γ-benzyl l-glutamate)-graft-poly(ethylene glycol) (PBLG-graft-PEG) copolymer was synthesized by the ester exchange reaction of PBLG homopolymer with mPEG. Aggregation behavior of the PBLG-graft-PEG copolymer in mixtures of ethanol and chloroform was investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and viscometry. Effects of the polymer solution concentration, grafting degree, test temperature, and chloroform content on the morphology, average particle diameter, and critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the micelles formed by the PBLG-graft-PEG copolymer in the mixed solvents were mainly studied. It was revealed that the PBLG-graft-PEG copolymer can self-assemble into polymeric micelles with a core-shell structure in various shapes depending on the preparation conditions.
